Come stare at my birth defect - info would also be nice :)

yo!

so i was born with a 'defect' on my back - basically a sort of dent/scar
it's never caused me any problems - it doesn't bother me; i just ignore it.

but my question is - WTF is it and what caused it? - just interested - does anyone know people who have the same thing?

pics: sorry about poor quality - taking a clear pic of your own back is surprisingly hard

.... looks a bit like a belly button ..... haven't seen one like it before, doesn't seem like anything you should be worried about showing tbh.

But sorry no idea what your 'birth defect' is :p:

Cant remember the name of it but during growth of the baby if the mum isnt getting enough folic acid something can go wrong with the spine, and sometimes it can result in major problems, other times you just get a small dent at the bottom of the spine.

My girlfriend has something like that, just not quite so prominant.

Say it was a rugby injury, or a "war wound" or something like that. Thats what I say all my scars are... well because they are, but thats beside the point. It makes me feel better and not ashamed of them.

Spina Bifida?? :p:

Reply 6

That might be it. The dent is where it started to happen but fixed itself over the course of the pregnancy.

Don't think it's spina bifida; from what I remember you'd be really fragile if you had that. Ask a doctor?

What part of your back IS that?? Looks like a belly button to me!

Reply 9

no idea what the dint is but the funny looking patterned skin is the same as my birth defect, but mines on my leg.

Your back is the most bizarre shape. It looks like a belly.

Reply 11

if it doesnt cause any pains, then no worries m8y lol, doesnt look scary at all or disgusting or anything............so no need to worry.

May i suggest you actully see a doctor about it though, just incase it can cause problems in the future .....

Scars make you sexy. Say it's a shark bite

Thats a bloody belly button

Reply 15

Maybe you had a tail removed when you were born?? Crazy but it can happen!

But seriously, if it doens't bother you don't worry about it, you could always go and just ask a doctor to take a look and see what they think?

Actually it might actually be some sort of spina bifida:

Spina bifida occulta

Occulta is Latin for "hidden." This is one of the mildest forms of spina bifida although the degree of disability can vary depending upon the location of the lesion.

In occulta there is no opening of the back, but the outer part of some of the vertebrae are not completely closed. The split in the vertebrae is so small that the spinal cord does not protrude. The skin at the site of the lesion may be normal, or it may have some hair growing from it; there may be a dimple in the skin, a lipoma, a dermal sinus or a birthmark.

Many people with the mildest form of this type of spina bifida do not even know they have it, or symptoms do not appear until later in life. People with spina bifida occulta may suffer from a tethered cord (diastematomyelia), when the spinal cord gets trapped below the affected level of the growing spine. This may cause neurological problems of the legs and bladder.

Basically, if it is that, you haven't got anything to worry about because it's the mildest form and doesn't have any major consequences for your life.

I'd say spina bifida too. A lot of people in my part of Wales seem to have it, including me (to a very minor degree). Don't worry about it. But yeh, it does look like a bellybutton.

Actually looks like a scar one of my friends has from operations he had from when he had cancer when he was young.
Say you had cancer. You'll get all the girls.

Looks like a scar to me. i have one that looks very similar to that on the back of my knee where a tooth on a bike sprocket penetrated about 1cm
