Realistic chances of marketing job without marketing degree?

Scroll to see replies

The CMI offers foundation, certificate and diploma...it is not the same of a normal degree? which of these is the best? im confused 😖
If my degree is in another subject, but I have gained some relevant skills and maybe part-time work, is it possible to get a job in marketing without the degree?

Having looked on job sites, most of them require a degree in marketing.

I want to study something else as I am confident I can get the skills outside of this, but I can't afford not to be employed upon graduation, so any input appreciated.

Yes it is absolutely possible if you gain marketing experience on the side. Alongside my psychology degree I volunteered for a charity to assist with their marketing for about a year. Then at my job interview once I graduated uni I just explained how I can use the benefits of studying psychology combined with my practical marketing experience. My job specified it required a marketing degree but I applied anyway and got offered an interview. Just make sure your CV and cover letter stand out! I’ve now been working in my dream job for nearly three years so deffo give it a go if that’s what you wanna do. Generally you’ll be working for a marketing manager who will guide you with what to do anyway once you start the role.

CIM is always a good option but most organisations should fund you to do this if marketing is the route you would like to take.

A couple of other routes into marketing are to look on Coursera and do some self study (I believe Wharton offer a couple of good marketing courses), this will not land you the job but will provide interesting discussion material in the interview.

Alternatively, if you struggle to land a marketing job, in the UK sales and marketing work hand in hand. So you could always find the industry you are interested in and take on a sales role with a view to transition into marketing after 18months. This will probably equip you with some decent skills and will ultimately make you a better marketeer.
