Am I eligible for the SFE postgrad loan having already done an integrated masters? Watch

I posted a similar question earlier elsewhere on the forum but figured I might get a more conclusive response here.

I will have completed an MMath by the end of next year, funded by the standard £9k per year undergraduate loans, and would hopefully be applying for either a MASt or MSc afterwards. Would having done an MMath make me ineligible for the new £10k postgrad loans coming in, or does the MMath still count as an undergraduate course, despite being an integrated masters?

    Thanks!

    Hi there.

No, unfortunately that would not be the case.

We are unable to fund anyone for an equivalent or lower level qualification (ELQ).

If you already hold a Masters we cannot fund you for another.

    Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to me - has this been a recent development? I notice that your answer here:

    http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=3915037

suggests that integrated masters are not counted as a postgraduate degree and therefore do NOT make you ineligible for the postgrad loans coming in. In particular, on the page here, under 'Previous study':

    http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/cont...-can-get-a-PGL

it says 'You can only get a Postgraduate Loan if you don’t already have a postgraduate Master’s qualification' - but an integrated masters is surely not a 'postgraduate' masters qualification, since by definition of being integrated, it is done as part of your undergraduate degree?

    Hi.

It does not matter whether these are post-grad, or under-grad Masters courses, we simply look at the level of qualification and both an under-grad Masters and a post-grad are both still of the same level.

ELQ rules are the same for all courses and qualifications. Where a student already holds an equivalent or higher qualification to one they wish to study, we will not be able to issue funding to them.

If you wish to query that further, you can contact Student Finance - Postgraduate Loans on 0300 100 0031 for further info.

    Thanks
