    Hi,

I will be going to Los Angeles in August for a year to study as part of my degree and am a little confused by how the travel grant works.

At the moment my applications aren't means assessed as my parents earn over the threshold however this July my dad is retiring which will take a large amount out of the house hold income however it will still be around 10,000 over the 42 threshold i.e. household income of c.£52k however I note that this years student finance is based on 2014/15 income which is considerably higher.

For my year abroad I so far have paid over £500 for a return flight, $340 in visa fees and know that I will have to pay $2300 in health insurance fees soon. Based on current exchange rates this is around £2350.

Will I be eligible to get any of this back and can I get the application reassessed down to the expected household income for 2016/17?

You need to get your parents to submit their income details for 2014/15 first.

Once those have been assessed they can submit this: http://media.slc.co.uk/sfe/1617/ft/sfe_cyi_1617_d.pdf which will reassess based on estimated income for 2016/17. Even if you think they'll still be over the thresholds you should apply as there are some adjustments that could bring their assessed income down below the levels.

As for your travel grant - I'd recommend you apply for it http://media.slc.co.uk/sfe/1617/ft/s...orm_1617_d.pdf

If you're not eligible for any income assessed grant/loans then they'll adjust up the amount you have to pay before the grant kicks in - but there is a limit on what they'll expect you to contribute so you need to apply to see what you might be eligible for.
