Is it bad if you need to drink booze just to feel normal? watch

One of my friends feels he needs to have an alcoholic drink just to feel normal. If he doesn't, he feels very anxious, sometimes depressed, edgy, and sometimes aggressive and rude. He has missed classes on many occasions and has been warned by his tutor and also required to see head of faculty if attendance does not improve.

Could this be related to alcohol or another medical problem? He says he won't see his GP because there's nothing wrong.

He's either addicted already, or has anxiety problems and alcohol just helps him relax and feel normal.
