hmm, i was told that too - but survived the first year without one..the roads are scary enough as a pedestrian! i think i'd want full body armour to cycle.

the 'necessity' probably depends on which college/department you are.

saying that - i'd want an old fashion one = it would feel more oxford-y! there seems to be more mountain bikes though. lots of places sell them up here though, so i probably wouldn't bother buying a new one before you come up

I don't intend on getting one. I hate cycling in busy traffic. I either go fast or not at all

dont get a mountain bike unless you plan to go offroading or anything like that. People who buy mountain bikes to cycle around cities look like twats!

Get one that doesn't scream "steal me, steal me!"

And a good lock.

I've been told that a bike is an essential for Oxford - so just wondered if any of you Oxford people have bikes and if so, which ones?
Traditional style with a basket  or mountain bikes  ?
Thank you

Don't bother bringing one - go without for the first few weeks and see if you think a bike would be useful. If you want one then, buy a really cheap one. That way you hardly lose anything if it gets nicked, and it's less likely to be taken anyway. With any luck, your college will have a place for you to leave bikes during holidays, so you have no hassle of carting the thing to and fro and can just sell it when you graduate

Thanks for the replies!
I think that I shall see how I cope without one at first and then if I need one make sure that it is:
1) cheap (so that I can afford a lock as well!! )
and
2) not a mountain-bike

Thanks again!

I've gone without a bike, but my college is fairly central, I imagine if you went to one which was miles out of town a bike would be handy. Get it second hand though, a must, new bikes are normally nicked.

Yes, I read somewhere that the crime figures for Oxford are greatly inflated by the number of bicycle thefts!
My thinking exactly - scarf trailing in the wind, huge horn for frightening pedestrains or simply getting their attention and a big basket on the front.

Marvellous.

I agree!
Are you looking forward to Hilda's now? Do you think you'll meet your offer? I'm SO scared... :frown:

They normally steal the wheels; which are quite hard to get back. With most wheels looking the same and such.

Looks as if I will need wheel locks as well...

That why they don't take the whole bike, most people I know (who have bikes) get those massive D-lock things, so without some pretty heavy equipment they can't brake the lock. Thus they just take the wheels, which are just as easy to sell on anyway.

Ideally when locking a bike you should take the front wheel off and lock it with the frame and rear wheel.

Pain in the arse though, when you're already late to a lecture...
