I left school around 7 years ago and university I left due to mental health reasons 6 years ago - various reasons mean I haven't got an academic referee.
I haven't told my employer I am even applying as she would probably implode and so it's not worth the hassle of using her!
My first choice has said use a character referee.
Is it possible to use my partners father?
He is a well respected professional in a similar sphere, who I am not related to and isn't a "friend", and I know he'd give me a fab reference...
But would that be ok?! I'm mega paranoid!!

Your partner's father would still count as family in an extended sense, so wouldn't be suitable. The UCAS guidance is here

I had a colleague who wanted to apply to Uni (to do a course in my field as it happens), she didn;t want to tell our employers at the time so I did her reference. Probably helped that I knew about the subject and had worked with her for a while.
