There's a question from a past paper that I can't wrap my head around, I wondering if anyone could help:
Hydrocarbons burn in excess oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water. 20cm3 of a gaseous hydrocarbon burned in an excess of oxygen, 200cm3. After cooling, the volume of the residual gas at r.t.p was 150cm3, 50cm3 of which was oxygen.
The volume of oxygen used: 150cm3
The volume of carbon dioxide formed: 100cm3
The hydrocarbon was an alkane.
Determine the formula of the hydrocarbon.
