Colleges ppl are thinking of applying to?

Jus thought since alot of ppl went to the open day, most would have proberly have som idea now of a favorite college or a prefered1. plz vote ur choices and put ur reason down?

Personally i went to both St Peters and Sommerville, they both seem very nice, especially the tutor (Medicine) for medicine in Sommerville, (had a nice long chat with him, thinks he remembers me now! ;-))

So plz post ur votes and reasons,it would be nice to see wot other ppl thought. (If the college u like is not listed, just post)

My preferred college is definitely Magdalen, but the application rates (esp. for medicine) are pretty scary! The tutor at Magdalen (Quentin) was fantastic; he was the most down to Earth medic I've met! He came in wearing a Hawaii shirt! He also does immunology and pathology, and those are the areas I will probably specialise in.

ah, you didn't meet Stein..? he's away at the mo i think.

Quentin has the cutest daughter he had to bring to a meeting once..all us girls just cooed at her!

not many immunology/path tutes in the first year though, pathology is mainly a second year thing (preparatory reading..whooo! )

how was the open day..? which day did you go? (barrage of questions, sorry) if you were bemused by any people walking through the centre of town in boatie blazer & steward's enclosure-appropriate dress that would have included me..ahem.. we may have scared prospective applicants with the "oxford-ness"

Wouldn't a Steward's Enclosure-appropriate dress be better suited to the Steward's Encloser? Not Oxford High Street.

sadly, although looking the part, i didn't have a chauffeur to match, hence had to travel in public transport train luxury..ahem..& the high street was a crucial first part of my voyage

my outfit did however beautifully co-ordinate with the little badge..

be nice

Baz, of all people you should know HRR isn't a place, it's a way of life.

For 4 (now 5) days that 2112m stretch of river is the central point of the rowing world; it's a shame that the floral dress brigade are there too... And having lost twice on a Saturday (semi-final day for the ignorant), and going in said Encloser afterwards, I have ever right to be bitter!

I fully approve of certain members of the floral dress brigade.

I'm happy for the 20 year old ones to be present, the 45 year old Mother aren't so welcome, though.

do you draw the line at newly-nineteen-year-olds? *flutters eyelashes*

& i was there to watch the rowing..yes..lunch in Henley, pimms, fancy ice cream & the chance to get very dressed up & bitch about the mutton also in the enclosure were mere perks.

& i got to see people before they fly home for the summer..*sniffles*

do not question my rowing-spectating commitment! every damn day of lousy-weather-rowing-over-torpids! at least i didn't position myself facing away from the river..why do some people bother..ho hum.

I believed you right until you said you watch the rowing. Then you lost all credibility. Nobody watches the rowing. I had a bet on every race last year (lost 4 1/2 pints  ) and I didn't watch most of it.

Sadly I didn't meet Stein - but heard about him anyhow!

I can well believe it! He seems like the family sort of guy. Did she participate in the lecture?

I saw there weren't that many from the prospectus - second year looks a lot more exciting! Did you find that? But he should be good for the third year specialism (if I choose the immunology one).

The open day was good! Very good! Third person to ask me that now! Have you been offered rewards for most suggestions you can accumulate from us? I went on Thursday, after doing general science on Wednesday. And Magdalen was the best open day I have been to out of eight. So well done! Do you automatically get boatie uniform for just going to see the races??

H&E..but i did! I'm a woman, i can multi-task ice-cream,pimms & entertaining 1/2 of our first VIII on day-release (wait..does that sound bad?!) with watching boats float up the river! although i was constantly asking who was who..

Apocagem - Stein is fab. he's the main physiology tutor, so does lots of first year tutes. Quentin's daughter just sort of made dashes crawling across the floor..all ringlet-y curls..gorgeous. my second year experience depends on the very imminent first year exam results. am scared. indeed, quite a few 3rd years are doing projects in his lab i think. open days - not at all! i'm just interested, i remember mine of two years ago.. & wonder what kind of impression those around that day would have given..lol.

no, the boatie uniform is distributed on the basis of making the boat! & it's then customary to wear it to regattas it would seem. alternatively, the lower effort plan is to bag yourself a handsome boatie who looks good in it & become him accessory  & admire them & bask in reflected glory (!) .. on the other hand you might prefer one of the women's VIII..they have quite fetching black blazers..

Oooh, is it fun? It sounds quite cool, and I was going to go, but I decided in the end it wasn't worth it because I didn't know anyone there really (and we got knocked out on the first day )

I don't think I would have "appropriate dress" though

19? You're to young for Henley, surely? Unless the other half was in action. The girlfriends can be quite appealing, even if a little CLC "rah" at times.

And everone knews knows Henley isn't about the rowing; it's about who can drink the most Pimms, and which Mother's have the biggest and best picnic hampers.

Not even I would watch Torpids, he's a very lucky boy.

That's four emails in the space of two and a half minutes! I bet a lot of people turn off the email notification thing on this site after a while...

Aw... Took a break from watching 'My big fat Greek wedding' with parents and three (yes, three) younger sisters to look at photos of parents' wedding, and also located some pictures of my sisters when they were smaller... It's too cute for words really.

From my POV Magdalen came across as the best college I visited - not just because I already wanted to go there (going to school across the road has that effect on you), but because of how well the open day was organised, and the amount the college has to offer!

Oooh! Women's VIII in Black blazers... Nice. Nuff said.

our random boat were fastest non-qualifiers..!

it was good fun (although that was probably mostly my company). with my 2 days notice i had a slight dress dilema, but in the end went for a fabulous floral slightly retro number (that cost me nothing & was actually genuinely about 30 years old - oh my mother had good taste! ). but i did conclude that money can't really buy you class, so.. lol.

Baz - is there an age restriction? ahem..i'm 20, yes..

anyway, i was just there in a being taken out for the day & spoiled capacity

I do incidentally have a very small hamper - perfect size for champagne bottle & two flutes (has seen lots of action since trinity started!)

Helenia..what are you doing with yourself over the summer..? & congrats on the exam results!

the majority in that boat are pre-clinical,clinical or research medics, so you could have one for a college mother were you to end up there! (& incest isn't necessarily frowned upon.. )

Sounds exactly like my school sports day only with more scary people and boats.

Elles, it sounds brilliant for you, and exactly why I couldn't go. How much do you have to pay to get into the posh dress, and what exactly are these scary dress rules?

I don't know what I'm doing for most of the summer - a couple of camps with Rangers, friend's b'day party soon but apart from that...no idea. I need a job :frown:
