Summer 2017 Applications

Some people in this forum seem to have a lot of experience with the recruiting process, so I'd like to ask what are your thoughts about reneging a signed offer (to do an internship in a company in another industry)? Is it something that happens often, or is it unacceptable? Would you advise strongly against it, or is it not a big issue in your opinion? Thnx in advance!

email. what do you need to speak to them about?

started an app but before I could submit it, I pressed cancel. Now when I go back, it says "sorry you've applied for this position...." but I didn't even the submit the app. Citi claims that I have but I pressed cancel lol.

Do you know anything about this?

Yeah lol this happened to me when I applied for Markets. I contacted their HR (using the standard grad email) and they said a few people had this technical issue and they sent me some forms by email that I had to use to fill out the rest of my info. Only problem was that it took them so long to sort it out that the program had filled by the time I sent off my app. All I can say is just keep emailing, or go on linkedin and try and find a grad recruiter at citi and then send an email directly to them. The email format is usually [email protected]

Thank you for the advice guys. Much appreciated!
Anyone know how long it takes for Citi to get back to you after they tell you you've passed the test?

I feel your pain bro... Chem Eng is savage. I haven't been on here for a while and was just browsing through and thought I'd reply cause I feel we're coming from fairly similar circumstances.

I'm at a semi-target too, got in through a foundation year due to some pretty poor A-Level's. Basically everywhere rejected me straight away for summer internship, which was pretty demoralising after spending ages on the app questions (bad A-Level/semi-target combo probably done me, although I can't be sure). But I did manage to grab the one opportunity I was given by Barclays. They don't ask for your CV until the telephone interview stage, then after that it's a case study/face-to-face interview with someone senior as the last stage.

So if you feel you're getting rejected from everywhere again next time you apply without getting a shoe-in, my advice would be to really do your research on the application stages for Barclays. Then prepare like a madman for the interviews, but remember to relax when you're doing them.

I'd also say don't give up on it if it's what you want to do, but take the opportunity this summer with unilever for sure. I did a placement year at a materials company last year and it helped so much with stuff to talk about at the interviews, even though it wasn't finance related (it was research based in a lab). Interacting/communicating across departments, completing projects for important company work, working to deadlines etc. Also try and do something there which shows you go the extra mile and can use your initiative, and get a letter of recommendation, outlining all these points (things that banks would be impressed by and look for in candidates).

Hopefully with the unilever experience the next round of applications will go better, and you'll find yourself progressing further with the apps. If not though like I say, really do the research on the Barclays application process and prepare like crazy for it, the tunnel-vision focus of having just one bank to go for can help in a weird way. Good luck with it all.

How you figure out I study Chemical Engineering? haha.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I applied Barclays, f**ked up the video interview ffs . Will try again this year!

Some solid advice there, made me feel a little bit better... Thanks man
Question on the interview for an internship which I failed: What is the biggest M&A deal of all time?

I prepared a short review of the biggest M&A deals of all time for you as the preparation for interviews and summer internships.
You won't believe HOW MUCH INVESTMENT BANKERS MADE on the biggest deal.

https://business-piece.com/2017/04/22/the-5-biggest-ma-deals-of-all-time-and-banks-that-grew-fat-on-them/

And of course, let me know your thoughts.
Does anyone have any insight into BarCap M&A, what are the best industry teams etc??

Thanks

does Barc have a particular specialism amongst a particular industry/desk?

one would assume something technological as they seem quite technologically ready relative to other banks, in-fact FIs for that matter.

in addition, talking to Paul Birley he told me that Healthcare at Barc is quite good especially on the British side. what do you think?

if i was to ever work in M&A (highly doubt it), id like healthcare, retail, FIG or TMT. with my preferences in mind, does Barc have any notorious desks or any banks infact?

Sure, no problem! It was in Paris (interviews were in english). I was told by email that I would be having interviews and that it was an assessment day. Hence, it might be different for you.

Good luck!!

Hi,

I have now been invited do a face to face interview P&G. I would like to ask you the following questions.

What questions were asked during the interview?

Were all the questions strength/competency/motivation questions?

Were there any technical questions?

I would also like to ask what advice do you have on how to best prepare for the interview?

Thanks!

assuming you've passed the video interview (with a manager) - the face to face one is pretty much the same

nothing technical (though depending on role - I did one for sales)

prepare your story / reasons / look at past questions (they might be very rigor and detail oriented in your answers)
