AQA English Language Spec. B - Editorial Writing Pre-release + exam discussion

Edit: exam - the aftermath
_______________

Hey, anybody doing this unit? Ooh I wonder what's going to come up this year for the editorial writing paper.

Is anyone nervous?

I hate radio scripts. :p:

When do you collect your pre-release? I have to collect mine next Wednesday.

Edit: yeah I know it's a bit early for discussion since the exam is in 2 weeks, but I was thinking when we get our pre-release, we could bump this thread and discuss it!

I have to collect it on the monday, a week before.

Shouldn't everyone get a week to look at it?

Hey

I'm doing this unit too - was going to set up a thread myself on it but you bet me to it lol!

I'm quite nervous about it and hate radio scripts as well.

I also have to collect it on Monday, a week before. I find it a little strange how you get yours on Wednesday! :s

We've got 2 and a half hours for this exam however, loads of time really. As long as you address the target audience, I don't think it ll be too difficult.

Oh yes it's actually Monday  I was looking at my timetable and I have Language Change on Wednesday, got them both muddled up!

The trouble with this paper is that it's hard to tell how you did. You could be thinking you're on an A but in the actual exam mess it up and get a C!

My teacher said that you must use 60%+ of materials to gain highest marks, however I don't think I could possibly use that much in an exam! There are some materials which will be useless for my target audience.

 any opinions?

gahhhh. editorial papers suck. i am resitting cos i flunked in janurary...its all the examinors fault. first one gave me decent grades, the second bumped my grade down. this was the reverse for one of my mates who ended up with an A. I came out the exam thinking id done ok but nooooo!

Reply 7

oooh no that sucks! Did you request your script back/ get it remarked?

That's totally unfair of them!

I'm really scared cos we had the cheif examiner come in a speak to us about it and he made us have a go at one and he sed that mine and my friends was about a D grade(arghhhhh) so now im really scared, even though our teachers sed the only reason they didn't do one was because they knew they wudn't be able to do it and get him to give them a good grade lol!!

Anyway i'm confused about how much info you have to take from the text and do u copy it directly or do u shadow it or do u not use much at all???? This confusion is because the examiner sed we cant copy it directly and we cant make up our own information!!! Hellllllppppp!!! I hate this unit and really wish we didn't have to do it lol!

What you have to do is 'edit' in bits of the texts in the pre-release material, together with your own use of English to make it appropriate for the target audience.

You can copy bits directly, yes, as long as you you're not just copying many of the sources without integrating your own links and phrases into it.

You can also cut out and stick pictures in to try and make it look as realistic as possible. =]

Becca, I think you can make up your own information in some cases, like if you were doing a radio script, you could quote from a famous guy on the subject, for example in a radio script you could say "Dr. X from University of Y has stated in his book that ... blah blah" as long as the style is accurate, the actual quotes from people don't really matter. If your material has famous people in it anyway then just quote from there, but sometimes you might want something like that.

I recently bought book called AQA English Language Unit 5 (philip allen updates) and it has examiner suggestions and examples of Grade A answers. It's quite good because they give you tips on how to do it.
I am really nervous too!!

Reply 13

Tomorrow we get the pre-release! I'm so nervous! I hope it's not going to be some really boring topic! Anyone got tips for a BBC3 Radio script? Like what features are there etc.?

i took this in Jan, thought i'd done OK...not A but i thought a B at least, i def used over 60%! and came out with an extremely low C, borderline D. My teacher said not to retake because i have A's in my other units, but it annoyed me and now im dreading it cos haven't done anything on it and lost all my notes with tips from Jan! agh:mad:

Got my materials!

I don't know whether to study one and leave the other, or do both, which means studying them both in less depth...

Topics are "Sharks" and "Sewers and Sanitation". I just know most people are going to go for the Sharks pack! However, the Sewers and Sanitation pack is significantly thinner :p: lol

I'm sure you'll be okay. To be honest you don't really need to do much on it. Just read and annotate the packs, maybe practice writing something for each.

So........... sharks and sewers! Not bad... it could have been worse! :-)

I dropped my Sewers pack whilst running out of school today! THe floor was wet and it has mud all over it  I think it's a sign, lol
