Drugs are chemicals which cause changes in the body
The reason they make people addicted is because they change the chemical processes in the body (most likely a question, has appeared in almost all past papers )
Thalidomide is a drug first used to be a sleeping pill, then was later found to treat morning sickness in woman.
however, no one knew the consequences of it and it actually caused limb abnormalities in babies
because of this, government made sure all drugs were tested properly before release
I remember it like H.E.A.D
H - HARMFUL - see if it is harmful or not
E - Effective - how effective is it at its purpose
A - affect any other drugs
D - Dosage - how much of it is needed

Statins are drugs which lower the amnt of bad cholestorel carried in blood
Can be 40% effective at reducing strokes.

Double blind trial is used to see if the drug has an effect - neither the patient nor the doctor who has the placebo or has the drug
placebo is a substance that does NOT contain the drug.

Drugs - recreational - for pleasure /addictive/legal/illegal
cannabis - recreational and can lead to taking harder drugs such as coccaine and heroine
if you dont take a drug, this can lead to withdrawal symptons
medicinal drugs - prescribed by doctors
recreational drugs affect the brain and nervous system
legal - nicotine & caffeine - widely available so more issues surrounding it

Some athletes use drugs in their sport to enhance performance although it is banned
steroid for example increase muscle mass - unethical too
