You cant become a train driver if you wear glasses

I am now looking into being a train driver but this persons experience really has put me off:

My experience is that glasses are *not* permitted. Back in '94 I passed all the aptitude tests and the interview to become a train driver with South West Trains.

My aptitude tests, interview and medical were carried out at London Bridge. I passed all of the medical requirements except for the eyesight. I don't wear glasses normally, but I do wear them for driving. My corrected vision is 6/5, which is better than the value of perfect sight (6/6).

I was told that because my un-corrected vision wasn't 6/6 I would never be allowed to drive a train. So, unless the rules have changed since '94, you can't drive a train unless your un-corrected vision is perfect.

I wear glasses aswell and I know this persons experience was in 1994 but I wondered if this has changed now?

Well I do know someone who is a train driver and wears glasses and wore glasses before he became a train driver so certain train companies must employ people who wear glasses.

How old is your friend and when did he qualify as a train driver?

Also what company does your friend work for?

It's possible that this guys uncorrected vision also wasnt good enough. I applied to the Navy and they specify 6/6 corrected but also something a lot easier uncorrected. If that was true then this guy on the other forum may miss that out as he was annoyed!
