Cambridge Chat (previously New Cambridge Students Entry 2004)

Seriously, don't be. Cambridge is a safe place. As the girl who lives next door to me was saying, in London, there are rapes and stuff all the time, it just doesn't get the air-play and so people don't blow it out of proportion. Risk assessment is key. If you were an attacker, would you jump someone in daylight at a busy time when everyone's going to lectures, so, in front of people, or would you do it when it was getting quiet and darker?
I am DEFINITELY not doing options in the 3rd yr that require 7pm lectures.

I just get really nervous, sorry.
It's alright, I don't mean to sound mean (and fanny is more a light 'you're being OTT, shush silly' thing than an actual insult) but seriously, you don't need to get nervous... just don't do stupid things like walking across Parker's Piece in the dark with your i-pod on wearing dark clothes and with... well you know, don't make yourself a prime victim for mugging or attack or anything.

Someone who's nuts enough might do it during the day, during busy hours... if he plans well, then he will succeed, whether he gets caught in the end is a different matter.

Who is it?

I would have gone to that formal... if I was at all interested in our college's natsci soc... which I'm not... I'm doing a computer project and getting steadily more drunk... and it's making more sense... Alcohol content of student is directly proportional to amount of computer-y type stuff understood.
^o)... I should so try that when I'm doing Logic and Proof work.

You do realise I'm trying to stop her getting scared, right? It is highly unlikely that any will be attacked when walking to lectures surrounded by people. It's not something people should dwell on.

If you're worried, Minimo, don't go down Garrett Hostel Lane and down the back of the UL. Go through Clare or Kings, I find it's quicker that way anyway.
Im usually with people in the mornings, so it should be OK, and I make it a point never to have to go to the faculty at night
Charlottie - It's OK, I know you meant well, just I panic easy

She'll stop worrying about it after a good night of sleep.
On my first day of lectures I got lost coming back after lectures coz I missed my friends...and ended up wandering in the undergrowth near Clare, and believe me for a person with a disability that is terrifying.

LJ: I thought of that, but then decided that it would make me more paranoid and that id set it off if one of my friends went Boo

Buy a rape alarm from your women's officer. They might not actually do anything but set one of those off in someone's ear and it'll complete disorientate them. Or carry an umbrella with a spike on the end
I'd fancy one of those alarm things, sounds fun. Alternatively, you can get one of the things they use for basketball matches. I will buy one of those when I see one.

A guy called Chris, I don't know his surname! (we're talking my year btw!)

Incidentally, the Path of Doom by the UL is Burrell's Walk and yeah, it could do with being better lit. Parker's Piece needs to be lit up a bit more as well: I used to walk across it pretty much every night last year, quite late, and it was very scary...

...a whistle?
What you lot moaning about? At least you don't have to scurry down a COMPLETELY pitch black alley way to get home (which, apparently, is owned by John's who refuse to light it)
Oh yeah, I think I know what you mean...
round the corner from Johns after Trinity I think...its pretty dark there anyway.
L.J
a siren thingie...or an air horn...or something...

yes I know you were being sarcastic
Ever tried the siren on annoyed car drivers? We should so try that.
L.J
where's that?

Back alley up to New Hall, off Grange Road
whoops sorry :frown:

If you are afraid of walking alone in some dark alley, just get yourself a bike and kill everyone who throws himself in your way.

I find Parker's Piece pretty scary at night too, especially a couple of days ago when it was really foggy, but that's more because loads of people seem to think it's a good idea to cycle along it without any lights. I definitely think it should be lit up more.

Other than worrying about being run down I feel really safe in Cambridge. It's a lot nicer than home.

CUSU have (had?) a campaign to the council to get it lit better, I walked past one of their rallys, where there were about 5 people holding candles. It could do with being better publicised.

Bleh, Cambridge is pretty safe, there's not many places that you can feel perfectly comfortable walking at 4am.
