Bloomberg sells painkillers in toilets...at least the male one :s:. I am scared now.

Lehman's have "no sharp objects" on the bins in toilets. Even scarier!

He doesn't actually say "Frankly" in the book. :p:
Random fact: it's actually spelt "Dam" in the movie script to get around censorship laws!

Oh My God. I've signed up to RAG blind date. I was co-erced by our reps, and I've just handed over my £5 meekly... I might meet someone I know...!

Oh, and otherwise, 1,000 posts! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
You're hooked!!

When I was in Year 12, our Eng Lit teacher asked us which literary character we would like to...get intimate with. every other girl in the group chose Darcy. I chose Mr Rochester from Jane Eyre. Am i the only person who has seen the passion in his eyes?!

I would choose Captain Carrot from Discworld... (oh god i'm sad!)

I don't want to comment in much detail at this time. All I will say is that I am angrier now than I have ever been in my life, particularly because I maintain that CUSU is a worthwhile and hardworking union which has the potential to massively benefit our students. Your JCR Presidents are receiving official statements from members of the CUSU executive - you can request details from them if you'd like.

I would actually rather hear what your opinions on the situation are. Is it democratic for three people to make secret policy decisions on behalf of 18,000 students without either mandate or consultation? My fear is that people won't understand the issues or will just think that this is petty internal politics and be even more frustrated by CUSU.

hmmmm, well, where I stand on the matter is: it was probably a little sneeky of them to not consult the rest of the officers, but ultimately what they are proposing is a referendum on what many will consider to be two important points. When you say that you fear people won't understand the issues, this worries me because it makes me think that CUSU see the student population as a group of people incapable of making the correct decision about the future of their union. It sounds like you fear ignorance on our part, and that the major CUSU decisions should be made internally - which is interesting because you also say you fear it being seen as petty internal politics: to me it looks like you are afraid of letting an student wide point break out of internal politics.

So ok, supposing these two points do end up as a referendum, perhaps it really isn't all a bad thing, whatever the outcome. When it comes to the list of things that general students get to have a say over, most don't care what the result is, and hence most probably don't get involved in the decision making. However, if a lot of people genuinely think these two points are important, then they will surely act to make the right decision. And if you don't think people understand the issues involved, or even don't understand the importance of the two points under discussion, perhaps it's about time that those who are "in the know" actually did something about it and tried to educate the student population. Perhaps this is the perfect opportunity for women's officers everywhere to convince everyone of their worth and importance!

I'm not trying to attack you, I just don't fully get why you fear these two decisions going all the way to the student population?

It'll be fuuuuuun! A certain friend of mine actually did his whole date in character as Sherlock Holmes. I pity the poor girl (though she did make a fairly rapid exit). I'm going to do it - do you know when the deadline is?

I don't know if that was directed at people in general or Willa in particular but I tend to agree with you on the lack of consultation thing, although the Varsity editorial has confused me a bit because it says that the women's officer thing has come up before. They do seem like pretty big changes to spring on people without significant consultation though. I think the fact the two that are going to be put to referendum are being put to referendum makes me care a bit less about whether or not it's the end of the world because of what Willa said.

The one that's not going to a referendum seems really significant and I can see why you're a bit annoyed about it.

Of course, I don't really know anything about student politics. Does everyone who goes to the CUSU council get a vote on these motions? (Nevermind. I've found this one out for myself. The answer is no.) If it's a tie, do they construct an arena in Market Square so the warring factions can throw vegetables at each other?

It's more than a little sneeky, it's unprofessional and divisive to act like that. These people are still going to have to work together, and conducting proceedings like that is purely destructive to a team. It's not beneficial to anyone. Beyond that, proposing a referendum is still a completely blunt instrument; most people in Cambridge are still overwhelmingly apathetic to student politics.

If they pulled stunts like that in many other situations then they'd be crucified.

I just realised what Bloomberg didn't have yesterday: Strawberries.

I feel awful saying it, :frown: but I barely know what CUSU does, apart from organising Fresher's stuff/Club Nights and providing free contraception.

I didn't even know CUSU does those things.

Then again... why do I need to know? :hmmmm:
