wow, this thread is moving along quickly...

just to butt in on the convo, i've never really had more than two drinks of an evening... i've never been what you'd call drunk, but it doesn't bother me- just means i don't have to deal with any hangovers!

Almost me neither. I think I had four drinks a couple of Hogmanays ago, but they were all reasonably harmless cocktails.

does anyone know anythin about the proper choral/music soc at cambridge? i know you have to audition and stuff, and judging by this thread i'd say the standard is pretty high...anyone planning to go for the official uni orchestra/choir/concert band?

There is a university choral society, but from what I gather, it's pretty much invitation-only, hand-picked from the college choirs. College choirs are of varying difficulty of entry - from impossible - especially if you're a girl (King's, John's) very very hard (Clare, Trinity), to more normal ones where it as actually possible to get in even if you weren't in National Youth Choir etc. College music societies are similarly variable.

There are two main university orchestras: CUSO (Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra) and the rather unfortunate CUMS (Cambridge University Music Society) which has two orchestras. CUMS 1 and CUSO are of similar standard (at least grade 8/diploma), CUMS 2 is slightly lower, but still around grade 8 for strings, probably more for wind/brass. There is also UCPO (University of Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra) which is non-audition, of a reasonable quality but slightly unbalanced in favour of wind and brass (i.e. 25 flutes  ). College music socs also have their own orchestras.

Can't say its my favourite pastime, but you know, after about 3 pints you're like, hmm, is a fourth really going to hurt?

lol i think my main problem is an intense hatred for soft alcohol. Beer is too easy. Give me a good jd anyday.

less alcohol, but tastes like drains. which is never attractive. I can stomach shandy or the old german beer-cola mix though.
