I just forked our £90 on a DJ from M&S. The cheapest I could find in town . Apparently, I need trousers with inner leg length of 34 inches. And the longest one they have is 33 inches. Just bought the jacket not the trousers and now I'm praying I can get away with the ones I have (They are all tailor made after all, can't be that bad. Except that they don't have that two stripes of black silky things down the out side of the legs.)

What sort of price range will I be looking if I want a plain dress shirt? I want the cheapest possible.

Bowties... The only place I can find a self-tie bowtie is from M&S and it cost a tenner. Also, you can buy bowtie with cumband for £22. What's this cumband used for anyway? I'm completely useless when it comes to evening wear.
DJs will be used an average of once, maybe twice a term. slightly more, if you're a boatie. (maybe once a term more...)

rental of DJs costs in the region of 30 quid *each* time.

plain dress shirts aren't all that much cheaper than frilly ones - they are about 20 to 25 quid, as opposed to 25 to 35 quid for a frilly one. and i think the material of the shirt is what really affects the price, not the frilliness... personally, i'd recommend you wait until you get here before getting the shirt - lots of places in cam to get the shirt, and you might not need a black-tie affair for michaelmas term, which means you can grab a cheap(er) dress shirt during christmas sales...

bowties should cost anywhere from 7 quid up, though most i've seen cost ten. cummerbunds are essentially glorified, really thick belts that you put around your waist. not really necessary for black-tie affairs, and rarely worn to occasions like subject society dinners, or boatie end-term dinners (which will probably comprise the bulk of your DJ usage anyway...) the only time a significant number of people turn up with cummerbunds (from personal experience) has been the May Ball.

oh, btw, the el-cheapo pre-tied "fake" bowties usually cost a few quid less. but are WAY less cool. though you won't have to learn how to tie a bowtie, which isn't all that difficult, really...

and i'm *quite* sure most decent, self-respecting formalwear shops, or departments should have pants your length, since it's not all that uncommon a size... i guess you were just unlucky that M&S either 1. ran out, or 2. were poorly stocked...

Debenham may have some 34-inch pants. But they cost way much more than M&S. I'll go to M&S again sometime this week when I buy my bowtie and ask them if they have any. It's Leicester I'm living in. M&S has a huge store in the city centre and it has only dedicated 3 shelves, yes, 3 shelves to formalwear. Unbelievable.

May Ball... Just realised that I CANNOT dance

Do I need to learn ball room dancing? Or maybe Disco dancing? Or maybe just night club wiggles.

Surely you could just copy your avatar?

As for May Balls, how much do they cost? And given I'm looking at £100 for a suit from M&S anyway, can't I just avoid needing a DJ by not going to formal hall etc? And (I'm sure I've asked this before) does Cambridge really have an access policy?

Em... Sure, what a brilliant idea. Since I'm doing CompSci, I'll send that avatar to everyone in Pembroke and ask, demand rather, them to copy the moves. That'll be fun... imagine all 610 people dancing in the hall naked.

I'm certainly not getting one until I know I can't do without it (i.e. until I'm there and feeling really embarrased because everyone else has one and is wearing it while pointing their long pointy fingers at me going 'Ha! Pity the fool!'*)

As for naked may Balls, it would certainly be cheaper, and probably more interesting

*I'm sure they do this a lot at Cambridge

Oh! I've seen Whale Rider, and the end of it twice (first time in the cinema I work in, second coming in after work as may parents watching it on DVD). I thought it was a really nice film as well, and the end which I don't want to mention to avoid spoiling it (did any one else read that post with *spoilers* at the top and just carry on before they realised what they'd just read?)

Also I have added my name to the Thing-me-jig

I have it as a rmvb file. No doubt, illegal copy. Want to see it again? Then again... it's spoiled by the Chinese subtitles. Well...

Now, that's two of us already. Find a 3rd person with the same interest, we can start a Naked May Ball Society.

Rosie. I've got an incredible immune system that specialises in killing viral infections. To get rid of the cold, all you need is a jab of my blood. All, even better, I can give you half of my genes.

Disclaimer: Camford and Shuai have different personalities. Basically means, that your neighbour is a psycho.
which one is the psycho one, camford or shuai?

Well, neither Camford nor Shuai is psycho on his own. But since they share the same skull that's make them very volatile. So be warn. Your next door could break into your room at any time of the day and threaten to kill you. Well, I hope this won't happen during my time there.
