I went rowing today

YAY!!! What side, what seat and how good/bad were you? And now you're a novice, you should show me even more respect because I'm a 12 pointer, and elite rowers are sooooo much more important than novices..
just back from Gardies. That was some quality potion, burger I mean.

i went rowing today as well....it's good fun...but i think i probably suck. I was in a pair, and I was annoyed at the guy in front of me cos he obviously set the pace, and I wanted to go slower because I was trying to focus on my technique, so obviously I ended up all out of sync and so looked like a right idiot!

What rate was he setting? I remember at Balliol when they used to get the new intake in every year we'd put a novice in with a Junior international and do sets, which is basically a minute at 25, next minute at 35, next minute at 25, next at 35, ect, ect. Anyway, what they did was start off as normal:25, 35, 25, 35, 25, then you'd put a blast in at 50 and watch them panic. Too see their faces once they got back to the boathouse was priceless.

Also for bops expect fancy dress. And if you're at Clare, drag.

Sidney too.

Do the Clare people know a girl called Clare doing Music? Talented oboist, pretty, fairly short, brown hair... Just wondering!

Shiny, the invite stands if you wish to take it up. On the grounds that you promise that when it comes to choosing between Cambridge and... Them, Cambridge wins every time.

I get to study my first human brain on Monday! Hopefully anyway...

errr well the rythmn he was setting was probably less than 35 tbh....but what i wanted to do was this rhythmn: 1 second pull back, 3-4 seconds recovery. Because I was really trying to focus on: arms down, forward curve, bend lowerback, bend knees, pull, straighten back, straighten legs, bend arms....and so on. And I wanted to make sure I was getting it right...but instead I felt like I was being forced to do whatever came naturally...which was probably technically poor!

I wanna go out again though...but with someone who would allow me to get the technique right and slowly build up the speed!

See 35 is pretty quick; for instance Division I bumps pace is 40-44. Speed does help to give a more natural technique, really as long as you drive the blade hard and get your catches sharp the more artistic aspects aren't important unless for plan to take rowing to the next level. Sometimes colleges try to enforce a very artificial technique like what you've described, just do what you feel suits you.

Why are you not allowed to be drunk?
How can you get through freshers' week without being drunk?

2 very good questions. Anyone here endeavour to answer them? Oh hey as well guys, i'm just droppin in before goin to bed.
I am yet to be made drunk. I have consume quite large amount of alcohol during the pub crawl night, but, that was not enough. I know I said before that I got sleepy after 2 units of wine, but that was just total crap. As far as I'm concerned, freshers' week has proven that I am a worthy drinker capable of out drinking a lot of people.

Yeah, totally - all the medics knew that from last year, but he never mentioned it in that lecture. Have been happily telling all my NatScis about this, they were quite impressed.

Fishpaste - don't let them steal your soul! Just make up your own mind
