Well the fastest time in my set of 9 was by some seriously HUGE guy (who clearly was either a rugby player or should be) who pulled 1:21.something. So clearly that was the fastest of all the mens then.

When it comes to this notion of power....you have to make a balance between stroke rate and output per stroke. I think I wasnt putting enough into the output per stroke (rather trying to keep the stroke rate constant) because the other guys on my team slowed significantly their stroke rate towards the end, but must have kept on pulling damn hard cos they got better times than me.

Heck...i'm not complaining, 1:39.4 i think is pretty respectable, especially considering i only weigh 60kg. According to a little calculator thing I found on the internet, that 500m erg time is equivilent in power to weight ratio of an 85kg guy pulling sub 1:30! So all in all I think i'm not all that bad, even though my erg time was obviously a good few seconds down on most of the others (including those who fell off!!)

well done on your erg!! i pulled 2.10 i think...which considering i'm short and weak is pretty good for me!! i enjoyed it so much as well, i didn't think i would but the atmosphere was absolutely fantastic!!

try one! it doesn't take all *that* long... i've always wondered if the sub-6 people could do a sub-1 0.5k... also, apparently the concept2 training guide has some sort of chart ripped from the french rowing federation (or something along that line) which links your 0.5k to a 2k time you *should* be getting. (although if i recall correctly, i think a sub-1 0.5k makes someone rather disturbingly close to a 5 min 2k  )
It would depend on the first 10 strokes. If I could hook up at good start and get up to full speed early and smoothly, there would be the possibility of going sub-1; but it would need to be a perfect erg on a favourable machine. A time of sub-1.10 would be more likely.

just thought you might be interested... (if you could pull a sub-1, extrapolating from the chart, your 2k should be 4+!!!)

YAY i solved Tick4 ALL BY MYSELF...without going to the silly lecture. I admit I did look at the online solution, but I figured out why it all worked....and in quite a few parts I did my own method rather than copy and paste! Yay today has been most productive! I feel like celebrating....

....oh crap...still have physics and computing to get done by tomorrow...ARGH!

    I really don't know; as I said, 500m isn't a distance we normally cover.

    Handbags at dawn, ladies!

Our second outing was a bit lame today. Once we were together, it was generally better than the morning, but it showed what a difference having an experienced cox makes

Mmmm, formal tonight. We're going to have to not hang about in the bar for too long afterwards, after last week's fiasco of not getting into Cindies, we don't want a repeat!

Unfortunatly, the nature of proper rowing means that I can't just do what I want. If I did, I don't think Jurgen Grobler or Cambridge would be too happy.

so you're saying that you cant spare a single free 2 minutes to just pull out 500m on an erg machine? that's pathetic! You could do that on a sunday...no harm would come of it! You know I will only think of you as pathetic and scared unless you give it a go and tell us what your time was!

Now, what would I be scared out? Why don't you do a man's distance and then we can compare.

In all seriousness, I have 4 or 5 gym sessions a week, all of which are used to specialise on certain fitness and weight training regimes. If you're really interest, from KHL's graph it looks like my 500m time would be about 1.20, maybe a bit lower consider I tend to have a fast pick up and cadence.

i don't know... i think you could do quite a bit faster than that... consider this - novices, admittedly the best ones, can already pull 1.21. you, as a blue boat level rower, i'd say you have a fair shot at sub-1, whatever that stupid chart says. i doubt many of the novices, no matter how good, could match the 2k time predicted by using their 500m scores...

no he wont go sub 1 minute, because baz is right, 500metres is all about raw power (nothing with power for weight, and very little endurance). Unles baz is a huge rugby player, he wont pull less than 1:10. As I say, 500metres is a measure of anerobic ability, not aerobic, because you arent keeping it up for long enough. Ok aerobic comes into it a bit (otherwise I would never have gone sub 1:40) but the big difference comes in raw power......and baz sounds like he's got good power and good endurance...hence can pull good long distant times, but you need incredible power to pull amazing 500metre times.

I think they might have. But I'm not certain... cos I'm only a 50%er.
