I can't see why "they don't shake hands with each other" implies that one shake all the hands, and the other shake 0 hand.
ok think about......you know that to recieve 2n+1 different answers, somebody shook no hands and somebody shook 2n hands...those both being the minimum and maximum. Now imagine you are invited to the party yourself and go with your partner, who you dont shake hands with. There are n couples invited to the party. For you to shake 2n hands you have to shake hands with everyone else (except your partner). since you shook hands with everyone, everyone can not be the people who shook hands no times, hence the person who shook hands no times was your partner.

That was may argument to start off with. But, my supervisor pointed out that there is a different way of adding in a couple and the result would not be (2n, 0) hands shaken. I can't remember how that works now. I think she said something like you can add the couple on 2 ends, which is what you've done; or you could add them in the middle. But I can't seem to be able to figure out how this "in the middle" scenario works. Anyway, if you are happy with your argument, then hand that in. If your supervisor is fine with the arugment, let me know. I'm going to ask mine again.
Great start to the term, just had to email one of my supervisors (who for Lent term is also my DoS!) to say I'm really having problems writing her essay because I don't really understand it even after reading four books, the theory books that explain it (rather than ethnographies) were all out at the end of term so I have no where to look to try and solve my confusion! She's also very scary and already thinks I'm a slacker!
do many people drop out of your colleges? there seems to be alot of people dropping out (and more threatning to) of my year for various reasons. they're the ones I like too.
*managed to upset somebody today, completely accidentally, feeling like an ass*

I think we only had one person drop out from our college last year (correct me if I'm wrong, Vicki), but a few people degraded, mainly if not entirely for reasons beyond their control. The drop-out rate is pretty low here, but it does happen.
I nearly dropped out in my first Michaelmas term. I was utterly convinced I wasn't good enough for the place and the only reason I'm still here is the persuasion of my then-tutor! I am hugely glad he convinced me to stay.

are all colleges as nice as Sidney in letting people degrade? there seem to be quite a few people who've done it, although, like you say, most of these were exceptional circumstances

There's CompSci got degraded due RSI. I hope that doesn't happen to me.
