call me slightly (very) idealistic...but why can't they just hold their hands up and say "ok, so the people who *used* to run the country did bad things, but we've got better people now and we're going to be nice to everyone".

if only everyone did that. ah well, i'm going back to my happy pink lauren universe.

Can I share your universe with you? Please? That'll be rather nice.

*/me is an idealistic git, that's why /me loves O.C. so much*

It's offered as part of the GCSE, AS- and A-level history syllabuses, and no (before you ask), our textbooks don't go on about how much the colonies needed us and if they weren't going to make the most of what was theirs then we had a right to do what the hell we liked with it...

I know what you're getting at, but it's not quite the same thing.

Everyone in my history class (all of whom come from ex-colonies) wanted to do the Britain and Decolonization unit for Edexcel Unit 5. But our teacher wasm't too keen...he sighted some rather lame 'logistical reasons' but tbh, although he was a nice guy, i think he was wary of confronting the debate which might have arisen during the course.

Useless teacher. Like supervisors, if they aren't willing to argue with you they're useless. They just use the "I'll have to look that up and get back to you argument" when you question them rather than ceding or arguing their point and they never get back to you. You don't learn anything. Useless.

Reading what you said, I think I want to change my maths supervisor.

By the way, why aren't you at the lab yet?
The Intel lab's air is not healthy. It is not. I should have thought about the health risks 64 computers in a giagantic room can propose before I applied. Now I really wish I had applied to do something different.

I am about to meet the man who invented C++. Not a big fan... pointer arithmetic kills my brain faster than any alcoholic product known to man.

Won't be at the lab until 7 or so if I come at all today. Going bowling for my mates birthday at 2, as much bowling as we can manage before 6 or something.

Intel lab air is distinctly bad, it's practically thick enough to be edible. Why are you meeting Bjarne Stroustrup and why isn't he in America at the moment?

Got an e-mail from my DoS saying that this guy is here, and if you want to see him then come at 11 to lecture theatre 2 on Monday. I'm hoping it's going to be like a talk of some kind, because I have nothing to ask him about.

Why hasn't your mate packed up his breadboard? Shall I temper with it a bit?
By the way, those gems look good on you. Since when did you double your rep? Time to shoot downstairs.

Because it's simpler to just leave it all set up, I wouldn't if I were you, he'd probably kill you. You know he's crazy enough.

I only seem to get repped by people who have a reasonably large rep power or have none at all, 322 points from 6 posts. So if I get some it seems to go up quite fast.

I'm going hide something that's not connected... *hides some green-black-yellow-blue thing* Don't tell your mate that I did it.

That talk was boring, even for a C++ Noob like me. So the next standard of C++ is coming out, only like in 5 years time. I'll be using it no doubt. Bah! But I will speak C++ with an ML accent. Functional programming all the way. He's a bit boring though... I'd rather listen to Paulson moaning about how bad it is for 24 hours than letting him try to convert me.

What do you say he is? The God or the Devil. Hopper thinks he's a bit of both.

The water I brought with me has the distinct smell of a may bug. I guess my original plan for the day has flopped belly up, time to catch the bus home for lunch. Gardies maybe. If I can't be arsed.

Bjarne just got back from Norway from a committee meeting on the next standard for C++, C++x0. I wonder if that means we'll be calling that language C++X0 in 5 years time.

Hopper gets things right a remarkably large amount of the time, the number of businesses he's been involved in is crazy. I'd agree with him, there are a few detractions from C++ but overall it's a very useful language for industry. ML isn't.

Besides, I would say that, I've only had one job in the industry. Which was developing C++. My graduate job is also developing C++. Go figure.

A.
I know C++ is useful. I'm sure everyone knows that. My future job is probably going to be something to do with C++, I guess we'll just have to live with the fact that Paulson is not going to see ML moving into the industry. But the ideas might .

Do you know the KCC compiler for Linux?
It's a B-E-A-Utiful day today! I'm going to take my laptop for a ride on the side of the college bowling green today. Lunch first of course.
Who will you be working for, Alaric, and where, if you don't mind my asking? Congrats, btw.
Time to take my laptop into the sun now.
Staring at an LCD out in the sun is not good for your eyes. So guys, don't do what I just did, unless it's cloudy.

Well since I've signed the contract (and offer of employment, and acceptance of their code of conduct and confidentiality agreement) and it's only conditional on my references checking out to a 'satisfactory' standard, I might as well say: Bloomberg. Should be pretty fun, they've got very cool offices (they're very proud of the amount they spend on offices it seems).

No, most of the C++ I've done has used Visual Studio, used GCC a touch.

The God thinks GCC is lame... And KCC beats fortran hands down in matix multiplication .

Patch: except there's a problem, because KCC is not available for download.
