    The A course notes for this current course is identical to the B course though...hence why I go to the A course, cos the lecturer is funnier.

    Crap... Why are they using the same heavily typo riddled notes? Chapter 5 page 3.. the bit that's underneath equation 5.11. Can anyone explain it to me please? I don't see any connection between that and 4.16.

    Equation 4.16 is the distribution function for v (well part of it). If you calculate v-squared-bar then you get 3kT/m
    substitute that in and you get the answer!

    4.16 is the degeneracy function, I can't see how you can get <v^2> just using that.

    of course you cant, but it says that it's the degeneracy function, and you know that you need the boltzmann factor with that to get the correct derivation. Yes I agree it's probably a small typo (it should be 4.13 probably) but so what, it's easy to see what the real value of it should be!
