Oh okies didn't know they were one and the same and you can't do oncology separately  So you *have* to do medicine to learn about cancer etc? and I'm wondering if Pathology had anything to do with cancer research? I remember someone saying it has, although the truth is I don't know exactly what Pathology is

Pathology is the study of disease, so it does indeed include oncological stuff. As well as much more!

So I'm assuming you would need Medicine to go into stuff like oncology/pathology etc?
Not necessarily: you could do research in that area with a cell biology degree, at least on the scientific side. If you wanted to go into diagnostic areas I think you probably would need a medical degree...

How would you know when a book is particularly good? You know, maybe I will hunt around for one some time! I have all of summer doing nothing, after all!

To be honest I think the only way you can tell whether you'll get on with a book is to read it. If you're really interested, I suggest having a look in some local libraries in case they have textbooks - a good one is "Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Alberts et al, which is nicely written and has some good bits on cancer and the immune system as well (in the 4th edition). However, I would NOT recommend buying any textbooks until you get to university - they're very expensive! Have a look on some shop shelves and see if you can find any popular science books on cancer if you want to buy a book on it... And again, I suggest flicking through the book to get an idea of the style in which it's written - some popsci books are better written than others!

I'd recommend this book

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0815329717/qid=1122586238/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl/026-9428459-5563608

it's an easier introduction based on Alberts. You should be able to get it from the Brit library if nowhere has it, or they may even buy it for you. Go & speak to a librarian - take the ISBN etc.

Iris: you don't have to do medicine to learn about cancer (girl, what planet are you on?) but "Oncology" *usually* refers to the medical side. If you were working on it without a medical background you'd be more likely to say "Cancer biology" or something similar. For example, an oncologist is a "cancer doctor", not someone who does research into cancer.

How do you know when a book is good? It can be as basic as having a look at a couple and seeing what kind of style suits you (e.g. I like mine with colourful diagrams and not in continuous prose) and having a look at some sample pages to check it;s about the right level for you - not all stuff you know but not all stuff you can't understand at all either.
... after 2 days of inactivity, Camford said, "Let there be another post". And there was...

Dr Greg House is a real nutter. You can tell he must have had a Cambridge education. He'd fit right into the nutty croud here.

God made soap opera, then he made Hugh Laurie.
Quite a sort of incongruous choice of actor I'd have thought.
So, this is directed towards Crana. Do you remember what you said 55 to 10 minutes ago from the time I made this post?

Of course I do.

So what exactly did I say?
Woohoo! A new personal record! 44 pills in one go! I challenge anyone who's on medication to top that record!
i once had 64 tictacs in my mouth at once?
visesh
i once had 64 tictacs in my mouth at once?

not pills doesn't count. but, HAD you swallowed all 64 in one go, inmidiately after putting them in your mouth, then, it would count as a valid record.
You OK Camford?

Put down the Pro Plus and back away...

I guess my record would be 24 (Pro Plus) but I did end up with a hospital admission...

When my HMS was worse I was taking something like 30 or 40 pills a day but most of them were big-ass supplements

You take 44 pills, and what do you get?

And I told him they were cough meds, and he panicked before he even found out what they were!
