Does chloé actually pronounce it that way? (It's a bit council if you ask me) or did her parents think they could stick any old foreign-looking mark over the e and it would be ok, or...?
cool - i went to the fringe this weekend too! What did you go and see? Was chloé one of these people that you met? I thought I saw her in C Electric on sunday afternoon!
Yeah I met Chloé after the ootb gig (along with simon). We then bumped into each other the next evening at C Electric, after having seen the newsrevue show (which simon had recommended). Following another recommendation by Simon (although we had already had it recommended from someone else as well) we met up again later that evening to see the most amazing guitar/jazz quartet ever!
So if you saw Chloé and Simon at C Electric at around 8:30pm then if you saw her talking to a blond haired guy, that was me!
Um, yeah, but do they actually say it "zo-AY" rather than "zo-ee", or did their parents just stick any old accent on?
(I defer to your MML knowledge if required..)
i'm guessing they probably just stuck any old accent on- they wouldn't be following french pronunciation rules otherwise.
tbh the names don't even follow strict english pronunciation rules- without accents they should read "zoh" and "chloh". plus saying "ay" instead of "ee" sounds far more awkward in the english language. so i reckon over time, the names were just anglicised, but people have still noted that the upwards accent (forgotten what its proper name is) is still used, as opposed to the other one

Well... that *was* my point.

Well, I know. That's why they should have the diaeresis.
It's different to just lose an accent because it's more difficult to use them in English (e.g. less easy to type) than it is to just randomly stick a new one on.
It's an acute accent... there speaks the MML student huh
It's just stupid to think that "Ooh. Um. We can ignore the diaeresis and stick a random accent on! They don't mean anything... they're just decoration!". Missing the diaeresis off altogether is (to me) not as bad; it's not like it's without precedent.

What shows did you see then?
It was earlier in the day when I saw her (or thought I did) - probably about 4.30 I think. We went to see gamarjobat, tommy tiernan, midnight velvet comedy club, golden prospects and the importance of being turbann'd which were all really good

yeah gamorjobat were incredible, I only saw them as part of a variety show so only got to see 10 mins of their act, but it was halarious!
