If I drew a probability tree in pencil would they still mark it? Or does it have to be pen.

    They would still mark it.

They only advise not to do stuff in pencil because all exam papers get scanned in and if you write really lightly with a pencil it might now show up. But if this happens I think they examiner would just ask for the paper copy of your script.

So basically if you use pencil, do it quite heavy so it still scans.

Im pretty sure that you just have to answer written questions in pen; you can draw, graphs, diagrams; etc in pencil, especially when its in math.
