MSc Management & Regulation of Risk@LSE

I’ve got an offer to the MSc in Management and Regulation of Risk at the LSE, which I plan to take up this September. I thought it would be a nice idea to start a new thread on this subject as I have come across very little information on this programme on any thread or website, except off course the LSE website!

Hence would appreciate if any alumni/ current/admitted student could share their experiences/ view on the course, the student profile, career perspectives ……etc.

i was thinkin about applying for that course, but all the places had been taken.

Done a Bachelor of Commerce and MBA from the University of Pune. Post qualification, I have almost 6 years exp in financial consulting in Bombay.

For this course a GMAT scored is preferred (which I took), and in exceptional cases LSE accepts GRE scores.

23yr old. Master student in Operations Research from Columbia University. I also hold an engineering diploma from the Ecole Centrale of Lyon (France). No job experience except summer internships.

Actually, I have asked for a switch for the MS in Accounting and Finance, as I am more interested by doing a carreer in corporate finance than in Risk Management. Unfortunately, I am not sure the program is still open (and not sure I would be admitted). If not, see you in october!

Its good to find a another person on the same prog!!! As the class size is small (less than 30) there is hardly anbody on the forums.

However on a change in prog, before deciding consider the following :

1. The admit procedure for the course is more selective and this makes it prestigious. Most people would have had a high GMAT/GRE and a reasonable amount of work-ex.

2. You could potentially do 2 of the 3 courses offered on the Account and Fin prog through this prog.

3. Besides, from what I understand, this is not a hard core quant prog, its more a generalist Risk Mgmt prog. So the way I see it, its Corporate Finance with a specialisation in Risk Mgmt.

Actually I recieved a mail this afternoon saying that the only places available for the A&F program are for the reserve list and that it is very unlikely that I will receive an offer.

My thought is that I have done an Operations Research program last year (which means a lot of stats and optimization), and the internship I am doing this summer does involve a lot of risk. My fear is that I may have difficulties next year to find a non risk-related job.

As you said, I planned anyway to take as many corporate finance courses as possible, and I am pretty confident with quantitative courses. Therefore, the risk management program will be fine.

I am not sure the risk program is more prestigious. It is not a big issue, but the very high applications/places ratio is probably because of the limited number of students per classes. It may also be good point for this program, as students from the same master often compete between them for most “highly competitive” positions. And it is nicer to be in small promotions.

What do you know about students in the Risk Management program? Do you have any idea about the average age, about the number of english/foreign students, their background and so on?

If you prefer to mail me, my email is [email protected]

See you

Great to have found u two here~~

I hold an offer for this programme as well, and have decided to take up.

As to the student profiles Charles asked for, they r available on the official LSE website, downloadable as pdf file actually. Try this:
http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/accountingAndFinance/pros-stds/degrees/mscmrr/index.htm

That brochure contains some detailed info about this prog, including rough student profiles. Well~ it was last renewed in 2002, but it helps anyway  I've also come across statisitcs on recent LSE students (not just the Risk prog)--in great details. Well~ forgot the exact links, so u'll have to dig into the website for further info.

I was most impressed by the optional internship at DB, sounds nice~ Do u happen to know more about it? Is that guaranteed or sth? I'm a recent graduate, so would prefer some hand-on experience while at the LSE.

btw, when do u plan to arrive? I'll probably be there in mid-Sept, so the accommodation's kind of a problem. Any idea?

As far as I know, the optional internship was this summer. You had to apply for it in spring, when you received your offer letter. I may be wrong, but it is what I understood.

I plan to arrive in mid September, but I am already looking for a solution for the accommodation. I may try to share a flat with a friend of mine. I found an interesting brochure on the website of the university of London. http://www.housing.lon.ac.uk/ It’s a good start in that jungle.

Will be joining this programme as well. 26 years old male from Singapore. Really good to find people on the same prog in this forum. Thinking of taking Financial Risk Analysis, Applied Corporate Finance, Quantitative Methods for Finance and Risk Analysis and Derivatives for Option 1 & 2 and Regulation of Financial Markets for Option 2. Anybody has more info abt the optional internship?

Will be coming to London ard 22 Sep. Currently looking for accomodation, how is the accomodation hunting exp? Any suggestions?

As far as I know, for us the internship was this summer. But I wouldn't bet the farm on that.

For the accomodation, I finaly found...an expensive one. There are some interesting things near Aldgate east if you have a tight budget. The area is pretty cheap, the place sucks but you are within 20min door-to-door from the LSE by tube.
