I press the power button but nothing happens. Is there anything I should try before taking it to a computer store?

Plug in to power source and wait a few seconds then try power button?

if not try and safely remove battery pack and just connect computer to power source and see if that works

I feel so sad that everyone assumes computer means laptop and not computer (and judging by OP's reply is right).

Before you take it, remove the battery and use just cable.

Then open it up and remove any dust, especially from the fans.

Wow TSR has more sub forums than I even knew about (this was in Advice).

Anyway I took my laptop down to a local comp shop to have it diagnosed. When the techy tried it, the computer booted up strait away no problem! He also said my battery had run flat because the power indicator was at 1% (plugged in and charging). I explained that my comp was plugged in so he asked me to check the fuse back in my house.
As I went to do that it turned out the multi socket outlet my laptop was plugged into wasnt switched on at the mains (altho it was plugged in). Its easily done!
