Chemistry electron configurations

Why isn't the configuration of Ni 2+ 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d6
( the markscheme says 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d8 ) ??

The outermost electrons are the 4s2 electrons. When transition metals get ionised, these are lost first.

So during ionisation, remove the 4s electrons first!
