Great suggestion by @OxFossil ! The other thing to do would be to speak to the teacher who is writing your UCAS reference - we look to this for inidicators of mitigating circumstances, and any reference they make (informed by the school counsellor) will certainly be taken seriously.

I hope that helps - but please do PM or even call (01865 284203) if you'd like to disucss a little more

Thank you so much! Very helpful information! I’ll definitely talk to him. Have a nice day!

Dear LMH, thank you so much for doing this thread. I am an international student studying IB and are keen on applying to oxford this year.

Upon reading a lot of questions and the respective answers on number of A/A* on average a successful applicant has obtained in GCSEs, I started to worry because I do not have GCSE results since it is not part of our school curriculum. If I don't have GCSE results, how do admission tutors view my application? I will only have predicted grades, my personal statement, and school recommendations, would it be a disadvantage to not have GCSE results?

I only found out about this thread recently and have not had time to go through every single posts here so please excuse me if this question has already been asked. thanks a lot for your time.

Hello! Don't worry about this - we have a large number of international applicants, and are well versed in assessing candidates who don't have UK qualifications. We have a rigorous system in place to ensure all candidates are considered carefully and fairly - your academic achievements till date will be just one part of this. We will look at admissions tests, personal statement, performance at interview etc. You will not be at a disadvantage at all.

It would be useful to have a look at this link if you'd like to find out more about applying with international qualifications.

Hope that helps

Hi LMH! Thank you for doing this thread. I have a few questions as a prospective applicant currently in my Gap Year, after having achieved A*A*A*A* at A Level, 8A* and 2A at GCSE. I'm applying for History and Spanish which I understand has a relatively small intake. My questions are as follows:

1. How often do candidates applying for Joint Honours get offers for Single Honours instead?
2. Would my written work be expected to be from Year 13 or something I've written more recently?
3. Cambridge automatically pool candidates who have already achieved 3A*, is this the same at Oxford?
4. Will entrance exams carry less weight considering I already have my grades?

Thank you!

Oh and another question I forgot to add - Are extenuating circumstances necessary to submit considering I achieved 4A*s? I was struggling with unmedicated depression and anxiety during my exams, which is noted in both my UCAS and my reference, but I'm unsure whether to contact Oxford directly about this.

Hi! This thread looks really interesting and insightful so I was wondering if there is something like this for St Peter's College as I have applied there to read law. Thank you very much.

Hello, iIhave a levels that are very poor but i am doing a foundation year at the moment in Sheffield University. Do you think that my application would have a fair chance if I score high marks on the PAT.

Reply 567

I did 12 GCSEs and got 2A*s, 9As and 1B.
For AS I did History, Psychology and Economics getting AAC.
I've dropped and picked up a subject in Yr13, so at the end will have four A-levels in English Literature, History, French and Psychology. I'm predicted A*AAA. I'm also doing the EPQ and predicted an A for that. I've done a practice of the LNAT and got 19/42. Would I stand a chance for a Law with French Law course at Oxford?

Hi there @LMH OXFORD

I'm referencing a quote from Peterhouse Admissions (they happened to be answering in the thread at the time) but I'm actually after making an application to Oxford so I thought it'd be wise to double check.

Peterhouse Admissions
Don't forget that your teacher can draw attention to other relevant aspects in their UCAS reference or in a separate letter to the admissions office of the college you apply to, at either of Oxford and Cambridge. We want as much information on our applicants as we can get as this can only help us in reaching the fairest decisions.

I just want to double check that's something that can be done? As it stands, I tried looking on ACORN at my postcode but it says I come from a wealthy area which doesn't accurately reflect the income and situation here at home. My reference writer said in theory he would have no problem writing a further letter to the admissions tutor at the college I want to apply for explaining my circumstances, but as I say, I just want to double check that indeed it is possible?

Hi! @LMH OXFORD

I'm applying to LMH to do Mathematics and Computer Science for 2018 entry and I'm wondering what factors are most and least considered during application. So are GCSE grades more or less looked upon than predicted A-Level grades for example? And how much weighting does the MAT hold?

Hiya LMH.

Unfortunately, the two people who had earlier agreed to write my reference have backed out in the last moment, so I'm wondering how applications without references are looked upon, if at all.

Hi @UCASLord - I know you posted this in the q&a also. First of all, I am sorry to hear they backed out. The answer I gave you came specifically after a discussion with the senior tutor for admissions. However, colleges are independent admitting bodies, so I would recommend getting in touch with a few others to check in case they might offer a different opinion. Good luck and I hope it works out well for you

Hi Charlie,

If you meet the Alevel requirements (which your predicted grades do) you always stand a chance  I would recommend contacting the Law Outreach Officer to discuss any questions. I'm afraid I don't have contact details to hand atm, but you can get in touch with them by contacting 01865 271491 - any problems, let me know. They will be able to give useful info on the LNAT too.

Hello

As Peterhouse says, we take this very seriously - the best place for this information to go would be in the reference itself rather than as an adittional document. If we require any additional info, we will be in touch.

Have you spoken to your referee about what is going into the reference?

I got these grades in igcses(which are supposedly harder than normal gcses):
BIOLOGY:A*
CHEMISTRY:A*
PHYSICS:A*
MATHEMATICS:A*
ENGLISH LANGUAGE:A
RELIGIOUS STUDIES (ISLAMIAT):A
PAKISTAN STUDIES: (HISTORY+GEOGRAPHY)A
WORLD HISTORY:A
URDU LANGUAGE:B
Is engineering at Oxford a realistic idea?
Editchool only offered 9 igcses. Will that disadvantage me as I could have gotten more A/A*.

Hello! So good to hear you are applying to LMH

Unfortunately, this is a really difficult question to answer definitively. It's such a holistic process, and we look at each aspect of your application carefully - nothing is necessarily the be all end all, or more important than another stage. What I would say is that we do not have a requirement for GCSEs (yes having excellent grades can make your application more competitive, but we also understand that not everybody might have realised their potential at this stage, and use contextual data to inform our decisions), but we do for Alevels - so, in this respect, your predicted A-Level grades are more important.

Do check this link out for some comprehensive guidance on MAT prep:
http://www.admissionstestingservice.org/for-test-takers/mat/preparing-for-mat/

Also, if you email [email protected], I can put you in touch with a student who has sat the MAT.

Hello there - we don't have any formal GCSE requirements. We expect you to meet the requirements at Alevel. These are good grades - continue to do well, and pursue your interest in engineering in your spare time so you have grounds to demonstrate your enthusiasm for it
