Why can't I apply online?
I applied for student finance online. However a couple weeks later I get a letter saying, applied using the wrong form and I should apply via a pn1.
Why can't I just apply online and save myself filling in a massive paper application form?

Evidently not, that wasn't the question. Why do I have to use that specific form when any othertime it's okay to apply online? The same way 99% of people do.

Maybe they are lying to you or are picking on you because they dont want you to go to uni?
Maybe N1 includes different information from other forms?
If you want to protest, just apply online and tell them it isnt fair. Meanwhile everyone else can have their applications processed.
