Good universities for animation/Fine Art?

My friend really wants to do animation with fine art, and is going to have at least 2As and 2Bs, if not higher, in her AS exams this year, an A being in Fine Art. What universities should she apply to with these grades for animation and fine art ideally? Also, is taking a foundation art course a good idea?

She'd really like to go to one of the best universities in the country for this, so any help would be gratefully accepted

A foundation course is a brilliant idea.

1. Few Fine Art courses will take people direct from A-Level.
2. I havn't heard of any courses offering Fine Art with Animation as a B.A, only one or the other. A Foundation course will give your friend a better idea about what they want to focus on.

The 'Best Art Uni' thread has some examples of where to start looking regarding Fine Art colleges. Just ignore that_diesel

Most Fine Art courses will ask for signficantly lower A-Level requirements than these grades bar Ruskin (AAB - AAA) Winchester (ABB?) and Slade (BBB).

However, I'd advise your friend to get the best grades she can in her A-Levels (I've no doubt my grades helped my applications) and do a Foundation year to build a portfolio of work. Entry to B.A courses will be based more upon her portfolio of work than any other factor.

i've just had a quick search on UCAS, and apparently it is possible to do a joint degree in fine art with animation + illustration. However, this is at Bolton University which is definitely not famed for the best art uni.
Edinburgh college of art first year studies (scottish equivilent to uk foundation) lets you specialise in various areas before deciding, and they have a great animation and art department, so that is worth looking around this october/november on the open day.

ooh and i've jsut found something else now!
University College for the Creative Arts do a BA Hons Arts and Media, which sounds really good:
"This flexible degree course provides opportunities for the combined study of units from our degree courses at Farnham in animation, digital screen arts, fine art and photography."

UCCA have a good reputation for art, so i assume they will want a foundation or equivelent before a degree.
I've just realised that you're in Uzbekistan, so i suppose it won't really be possible to come and visit. Im not familiar with the area but its not too far out from london which i would consider a good thing, and also Edinburgh is a fantastic city and ive looked around the college there and it is really nice.
i hope i've helped you in some way or another!

oh dear lol now i feel like an idiot :P hehe
To be honest, if she's thinking of doing two different things like fine art and animation, she should do foundation to get a better idea of what she really wants to do.

The courses mentioned including animation, include two completely different types of animation. Edinburgh college of art does do media based animation, but its mainly geared towards traditional forms, whereas a BA Hons Arts and Media course is more likely to cover more new media styles of animation eg Flash.

With art generally though, I think most people get success through specialism, which is key in animation. People who are all rounders simply can't have the technical expertises of someone who has specialised in one area of art and design, and in animation from what i've heard graduates should show a specialism within animation itself eg storyboarding, character design, character animation etc.

Basically - do a foundation first.
It's a good idea to have a look at different foundation courses as their content differs. I don't know how easy it would be to find a foundation course that lets you do some animation, but maybe that's just in my area.
