You could discuss how Curley's wife is lonely (the only woman on the ranch, men all think she's a 'tart', etc). Candy is lonely due to his age, which always worries him as he can be 'canned' any minute. Crooks is lonely due to the fact that he is racially segregated and doesn't sleep with the other men in the bunkhouse. You could also throw in social context and discuss how migrant workers rarely have families, don't make friends, etc and are essentially solo wanderers looking for work and moving on after a short time.
