Particularly looking at Engineering, perhaps more specifically mechanical but not too sure yet. Tried applying for taster week at BAE systems but don't think I got a placement, any other alternatives closer to Kent I could look into? Also it has come to my attention that a school leaver's programme would be better. Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated.

They aren't needed or expected for a personal statement.

Have you looked at taster days / masterclasses instead?
    eg

    http://www.london.ac.uk/5197.html

    Or MOOCs?

In that case I think I will have to look into these more for the upcoming summer holidays. Thanks
