The Prime Minister faced a backlash from members of his own Government, including threats of resignations, after he gave warning that leaving the European Union would be the “self-destruct option” for Britain, and that the “moral case” at the referendum was to stay in the EU.

Speaking at the head office of B&Q in Hampshire, Mr Cameron said that, given these risks to the British economy, a Remain vote was the “moral” choice for voters.

He said: “The economic case is the moral case – for keeping parents in work, firms in business, Britain in credit, the moral case for providing economic opportunity rather than unemployment for the next generation.

“Where is the morality for putting that at risk for some unknown end? It would be like surviving a fall then running straight back to the cliff edge. It is the self-destruct option.”

Mr Osborne, standing next to the Prime Minister, took direct aim at senior Tory Brexiteers for allowing less well-off voters to take the hit of Britain leaving the EU. He said: “To those fellow politicians who say we should vote to leave I’d say this: you might think the economic shock is a price worth paying.

“But it’s not your wages that will be hit, it’s not your livelihoods that will go, it’s not you who’ll struggle to pay the bills. It’s the working people of Britain who will pay the price if we leave the EU.”

So this referendum is all about scaremongering, hitler, WW3, recession, and now this. What the next election would be like?

Either side calling it a moral issue seems a little excessive to me :/

    First holidays, now morality.

Whilst the other side invoked Godwin's law of the highest level...

The referendum has become a joke...

    Good point.

In a referendum as well, this is very direct.

Lol fair enough, I'd say Hillary Clinton too, she hasn't held back at Bernie (and Trump). If anything, this referendum is just an indication of how the general is going to be in the US.

TIL caring about democratic accountability and wanting better for the UK than the malfunctioning EU as it stands = immoral.

What a time to be alive.

But FYI 'Dave', I have never needed a single lesson on morality from an Eton toff.
    Take a hike.

How would there be improved democratic accountability?

The immoral vote is staying in Europe and handing control of Britain over to Germany and eurocrats. The brave soldiers who fought during WWII are turning in their graves.

It's irritating that each side never says anything positive about the other. Everything is coated in bias. I'd much rather watch a debate where each side is sensible, giving the pros and the cons. It's deluding the majority of the public. There are cons to staying, there are cons to leaving - but you rarely hear Nigel Farage or David Cameron say anything negative about the sides they represent.

You'd be surprised. Never forget the first basic law of human stupidity: "always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation."

In the UK parliamentary system we elect the legislators whom pass our laws.

In the EU we elect advisors to an advisory body with no legislative powers.

In the UK the Prime Minister, by convention the leader of the governing party, is an elected MP of the House of Commons.

In the EU the commission and the council of Europe are appointed, and hold legislative as well as executive primacy other EU affairs.

    Hope that helped.
I'd lean more to remaining in if the EU myself, if it was a democratic institution, but if I may paraphrase the Americans, no legislation without representation.
