I'm just going through a past paper before tomorrow ( :/ ) and I'm just wondering whether your supposed to join them, and if so, is it freehand or with a ruler??!

You join the top points, yes, with a ruler. You DON'T join up the bottom line connecting the first and last points. Sometimes they let you off but sometimes you can lose a mark for this
