I’ve applied to Chichester to study English and Creative Writing (I’ve applied to a few other places but this is at the top my list at the moment). I have a few random questions:

I was wondering if anyone could provide any feedback on the course. I was also wanting to get an idea of the atmosphere of the place, what's it like to be a student there? etc. Also, I know it is a sporty university, although I’m not a sporty person are there many clubs/societies that aren’t geared around sports?

I knew a couple of people who did that course and they seemed to enjoy it. Their year group was quite big compared to ours but they all still felt very much part of the group. Being a student there is quite a fab feeling tbh (I can now compare this to another uni and it's something I really miss!) - at Chi, you're definately a face & a name rather than a number and a walking pile of money. The tutors will know your name pretty quickly and you will feel like you're part a of a family (sounds like a cliche but I'm speaking from personal experience). I found the personal and academic support to be fantastic and very much an open doors policy.

Re: the sporty side. It's full of PE students unfortunately (haha, almost a rivalry between them and the rest of the uni. Anything goes wrong, it's blamed on the sporty lot). Nahh in all seriousness, you can avoid all the sporty clubs if you want to. Quite a few societies and definately more starting up every year. Music's got quite a big society side to it as has drama I believe. Get a group of friends together and start your own

Fab little place and I throughly recommend it. Beats my PG uni hands down!!

I'm in 1st year doing English (but doing Creative Writing as well as everybody does English+Creative Writing in 1st year) and I will be completely honest- it is great! I never though univeristy would be for me, which is why I chose Chi as it was local and (in comparison to others unis) very small. The atmosphere is really friendly too - obviously you aren't best best friends with everyone, but everybody is respectful to each other and on the whole most people get on well, and this provides (in my opinion) a great place to study.

The English and Creative Writing course itself is really good - includes four compulsory strands - 'Literature', 'Language', 'Theory and Criticism' and 'Creative Writing' in the first year, and then your a given loads of modules to choose from in the 2nd and 3rd years. If you want a copy of this years 1st year reading list then let me know and I'll PM it to you.

The lecturers are great, and because it is so small (there about 75-80 1st year English/English and Creative Writing students - quite a few of which are part time mature students - there is a real variety which is another good thing - lots of different perspectives) they know your names and get to know you as a person really quickly.

In terms of the sporty side, don't worry - I'm probably the least sporty person in the world and I'm loving my time at the uni - in terms of societies it is sport dominated, but as apotoftea said, its easy to avoid them, and there seems to be new societies starting up all the time. There's a list of current societies on the Student Union website - http://www.chisu.org/

Any other questions, just ask =)

Im thinking of applying to do Marketing and chichester uni(bognor campus), however marketing is a new course starting in 2009, will that mean it wont be good idea to do it? Also what is bognor like? is there a shopping centre and clubs etc? x

Courses have to start at some point and being the first year to do it will have its advantages and will probably get better during the 3 years. Bognor's more student friendly as a place than Chichester actually is. Cheaper to live in, has some shopping, not a massive amount - may as well go to Chichester for that, but even then there's no actual shopping centre as such. You'd need to go to Brighton, Portsmouth or Southampton for that. Chichester's shopping is pretty good though, got pretty much most of the high street names now. There is a club on the sea front and the SU on the Bognor campus has just been refurbished. The campus itself is really nice (I only went over there a couple of times)

Is there a late nite, bus or train service, from Brighton to Chichester or bognor and Regis , or somewhere close. Ie if you are doing course in Chichester university, is it easy to go out in Brighton (including weekends)

There's plenty going on in the SU pretty much every night, 7 days a week.

Chichester as in the town itself is more pubs & wine bars than anything else (usual quiet SE town really). But there is Spoons, Wests, Trents (very popular), the Vestry all in the town centre. Further out, at the cinema place, there's a Lloyds, Frankie & Benny's, Chicago Rock etc. The club Thursdays is further out from town which is pretty popular too. Also got a couple of clubs in Bognor which is pretty easy to get to as uni bus runs between the two campuses.

Plus you've got the nightlife of Portsmouth & Brighton - Portsmouth is 30mins on the train, Brighton is an hour ish.

Considering it's pretty small you don't tend to notice it. And there's also the very active sports club side to the uni as well.

Oh and I almost forgot - the annual Bognor Beer race which is when the majority of the students dress up in fancy dress and run from pub to pub. Starts about 10 in the morning and goes on for hours!

I honestly don't know what the situation transport wise is like these days. Last direct train from Brighton to Chichester is reasonably early, say 10ish I think, plus the 15 minute walk from station to campus. There's a uni bus that runs between the two campuses too.

Chi's a fantastic uni but if you're looking to be out every night with a variety of choice, then it is worth looking at going to university within a busy city. The SU does a lot for its students but Chichester is not the night life place of the world, I can assure you.
