Clothing hygiene... Advice needed.

Mods: Feel free to move this thread to another forum section if you feel that this post does not belong here. I've posted here because I feel that it is sort of releated to health, or at least the percieved health of others which can affect interpersonal relations.

My current situation is that I change my clothing roughly after wearing something three days straight in a row, unless I've done something really vigorous or messy. However even at this stage I get complained about by my parents for dumping clothing into the washing machine too much and that electricity wastage etc. I just don't know how often people wear clothing.

So I've got some questions I'd like to ask. I'll bullet them to make things easier. Any information or help would be appreciated.

1.

Would you consider wearing something for several days straight as unacceptable? Spaced out?

2.

How often do you wear something before putting it into the wash?

3.

Have you ever stopped wearing a particular piece of clothing because you worn it so often in front of others, even though its not worn out?

4.

How often do you get yourself new clothing annually?

5.

whether there is a pattern in when you change your clothing weekly?

and lastly... updated questions.

Do such things matter in reality?

When would be the next time roughly when you wear them again?

Do you wash all your clothing after you've worn them for a day, or you

Curious though, everyone talks about matching clothing. How many sets would you say you own, how many different trousers and tops?

I'm sorry for posting such an idiotic post to be honest, but I really do think this can sometimes influence other peoples perception of what a person is like... so it is important in a way.

Erm... i change every day. Sometimes wear the same pair of jeans twice if i'm just lounging around indoors.

Edit- Sorry, i'll answer the Q's

1- Yeah probably. Especially tops, although for me its just because i sweat absolutely loads!

2- Once or twice. If your parents say 3 times before putting it in the wash, you could always do your own at a launderette or whatever.

3- Can't say i have.

4- Erm, bits and pieces all through the year really. If i see a t shirt i like, or trousers or whatever i'll get them (Finance permitting :p:)

5- Every day

and finally

1- In my opinion yeah, don't like dirty/unhygenic people. Not saying you are by the way

Great, Thanks. That just reminded me of some other points that I'd like to know...

1.

When would be the next time roughly when you wear them again?

2.

Do you wash all your clothing after you've worn them for a day, or you just set aside for a while?

I'd never wear something for 7 days straight.:s:

I usually where something once before it goes in the wash, more though if I have been wearing it all day.

Nope I haven't stopped wearing something because i've worn it a few times before, I tend to wear something different each day anyway.

I usually buy new clothes each month or every couple of months, just the odd top or jeans/skirt etc.

Yeah, so from that I tend to wear a different outfit everyday.

You mean after wearing them twice? Well, i'd wash them and then, i dunno really, whenever i feel like putting them on again :p:

And yeah, it all tends to get washed after a day. As i said i sweat a lot, so it all would just smell horrible and musty if i left it.

1. I don't really care how long people wear things for, as long as they don't smell :p:
2. I normally wear something different everyday but don't put it in the wash until I've worn it 2 or 3 times. Match differnt tops and trousers etc
3. Yes if I wear something round a mates a couple of times in a row, I'll deliberatly (sp) wear something different, is that sad?
4. I'm quite bad and buy a new top every week or 2 but don't go on big shopping sprees so it evens out.
5. I wash my clothes on a wed and sun so wear clothes between those days and then wash them usually.

I don't think you're wasting electricity etc when I lived with my mum she wanted to wash clothes after every time you wore them, thats a waste!

Heh Heh, don't worry about it. I'm perfectly fine if what I am doing currently is being seen as unhygenic, its the reason why I'm asking here in the first place so I'd love the honest answers

i wear jeans that i bum around the house in for sometimes 1month+ without washing them and theyre fine. think its something about jeans they seem to just never need to be washed/never smell.

As for shirts etc, i hardly even wear 1 for an entire day. usually 2/day. Then an airing. Then in a couple of days time theyre good to wear again before needing washing!

Febreeze is good too.

My general rule is that tops/tshirts get worn once and trousers/skirts get 4 or 5 days worth of wear before they require washing. Pants change every day (of course!) and bras less often (depends on sweat factor)

Reply 10

yeah tops change daily but i'll wear a pair of jeans for ages in winter (a few weeks)- change more in summer though - e.g a pair of shorts for 5 days. BUt i'll sometimes take them off and where something else for a few days and then go back to the other stuff without washing it. I definitely reckon trousers are fine for ages. Not t-shirts and stuff though.

Reply 11

I don't wear the same top twice unless I smell it and it doesn't smell, lol.

But I wear trousers many times in between washes..

I probably own about 5 pairs of jeans, couple pairs of combats, some slouchy trousers, 10 skirts and than a million tops  well about 40-50 so I just mix tops with trousers and then wash

I wear jeans, bras and cardigans/jackets/etc more than once. Definitely not tops or anything else though!

Gotta admit.. I'm sort of shocked, but thats only because in comparison I have under 10 favourite T-shirts, so I'd imagine they get over used a fair amount.

This is something I've always wondered about, I sometimes feel like this due to my limited selection. Have you guys ever come across someone who you thought overuses a particular item of clothing?

Reply 15

Firstly, i'll change my top everyday. Secondly, i'd never wear the same top two days running anyway. Generally, i'll wear the same pair of jeans two days running if im running low on clothes, but usually i wear something different every day.
So I've got some questions I'd like to ask. I'll bullet them to make things easier.

Would you consider wearing something for several days straight as unacceptable? Spaced out?
A shirt yes, trousers not so unacceptable, but i wouldnt wear the same pair for more than two days.
How often do you wear something before putting it into the wash?
top, once. trousers, depends on whether they're dirty, if they've stretched so much they dont fit..etc
Have you ever stopped wearing a particular piece of clothing because you worn it so often in front of others, even though its not worn out?
yep, not stopped wearing it all together, but because it gets old.
How often do you get yourself new clothing annually?
erm, i'm slightly addicted to shopping. I go through phases where i'll buy something new every week. I've always bought a few items of clothing by the end of every month.
whether there is a pattern in when you change your clothing weekly?
no pattern..

and lastly... updated questions.
Do such things matter in reality?
yes.
When would be the next time roughly when you wear them again?
well, when they're clean.. or, when i've worn my other tops..or if i feel like it.
Do you wash all your clothing after you've worn them for a day, or you
I wash my tops and underwear (obv) after one day of wearing.
Curious though, everyone talks about matching clothing. How many sets would you say you own, how many different trousers and tops?

9 pairs of jeans, 6 pairs of either 3/4 length or knee length short jeans. 7 pairs of combats, about 15 pairs of other forms of trousers. About 20 skirts, 6 pairs of shorts. 10 dresses, far too many shirts to even contemplating counting and FARR too many shoes.

Ditto. Tops are a strictly wear once thing. Jeans/bras/cardigans get maybe two/three days before I wash them.

Hmm... I'm intersted, would this be considered as a standard amount of clothing for a person?

How about the guys, you have that amount?

Would you consider wearing something for several days straight as unacceptable? Spaced out? Personally I wouldn't wear the same things more than once in a row because I like change but I don't think it's weird if people do wear the same item straight.

How often do you wear something before putting it into the wash? I'm a bit of a clean freak so I wash everything after wearing it (except jeans because there's just no point)

Have you ever stopped wearing a particular piece of clothing because you worn it so often in front of others, even though its not worn out? I change my clothes all the time but if my friends had seen me in something loads of times I'd probably wear something else and wear the other clothes when lounging around at home

How often do you get yourself new clothing annually? I don't have a massive shopping spree at the end of each season but I'll buy a couple of tops each week and build it up like that... it's quite bad actually- I have no money!!

whether there is a pattern in when you change your clothing weekly? nope

Do such things matter in reality? it seems so trivial but I think they do matter

When would be the next time roughly when you wear them again? when I feel like wearing them again

Do you wash all your clothing after you've worn them for a day? yes except my jeans which I mentioned earlier

Curious though, everyone talks about matching clothing. How many sets would you say you own, how many different trousers and tops? Hahaha too many I'm not even going to bother counting.
