I've never seen it done this way before!

I just find two numbers that add to make b and multiply to make c, which I guess is just a shortcut version of this really...
If this a calculator paper question you can fully solve quadratics on a good scientific calculator (saved my ass for C2)

Nice! I don't know this method to factorise quadratic terms. You made it very good. However, one step in your second equation isn't right.

x^2 - x - 12 = 0 <=> x^2 -4x -3x - 12 = 0

You have choosen the wrong sign: -4x -3x = -7x, that is not equal to -x.

It has to be: -4 + 3x = -x

For Gcses we show the full working out. So if the answer isn't correct at least we get a few marks for the working out!

Exactly, I think the problem OP has is confidence or something, because I've never seen someone do that much working out. And I agree, you can do most things very quickly in your head.
