Guys joke about the size of my helmet

They say that it's too big and wouldn't protect me in a crash and that instead I should buy a tighter fit. It also wobbles from side to side as I ride so they started calling me "Shaking Stephens". Is there any fact in their assertion that a smaller helmet gives you more protection?

Nobody is too old to cycle.
A poor fitting helmet can kill you
Go to a bike shop and ask for a trial fitting, compare what you have to what they offer.

RAF pilot helmets have to be pulled slightly open in order to get them on.
I borrowed a mate's bike to go to the shops, he has a big head and a full face helmet
I did a "lifesaver" look before a right turn and the whole helmet span around so I was looking through a tiny hole!

I have a davida open face and it was really tight to start with, the shop suggested stuffing it with rolled up cloth for a day or two, which made it looser, but still tight. It now fits.
my helmet is too big and won't protect me in a crash either.. But i shouldn't be waving it around when driving anyway..
