Buying from private sellers online, how to be safe? Watch

"How to be safe" sounds a bit strange, but I've been looking at some Freeads websites where usually people put up their items for sale via collection but some will arrange it to be sent via the mail for an extra fee.

Usually they would request payment via PayPal. I have only used Paypal once before on eBay, so it would be quite different; I've never used it to directly pay a person.

I'd like to buy some things from these freeads websites but am not too sure how to play it. Basically, when paying for someone to send an item to me through the mail, how can I ensure that I don't get scammed?

Does Paypal offer any sort of security for this sort of thing? Would I also be fair in asking for personal details from the seller - for example: requesting proof of their name and address through email seeing as they would have mine and I should have theirs for security?

    Any advice?
