How does the maintenance loan work does it go into your account and then you have to pay the university for the accommodation?
And do you get the entire annual amount in a single payment or do you get some of it each term?
Also when do you receive the money?

It goes into your bank account, you get 33% each term and the payment date is normally the 1st week of term but your first ever one might be late depending on when your uni confirms your attendance so you might want some cash for freshers saved to be safe.

    Yes, that's right.

You can spend it on whatever you want, but the reality for the majority of students is that most - if not all - of their Maintenance Loan pays for their accommodation.

And do you get the entire annual amount in a single payment or do you get some of it each term?

As above, three installments through the year. You'll get slightly more in the third instalment in your first and second years, as that payment is intended to help you over the summer holiday. That third installment is smaller in your final year as your SF stops when your course does, so that summer is not covered.

Also when do you receive the money?
SF will send you a payment schedule which gives the dates each year. The first payment at the start of the academic year depends on when you enrol on campus (usually during Freshers' or Induction Week) and how soon after that your uni confirms your attendance to SF. I'd advise arriving at uni with enough money for a couple of weeks, in case of delays. Uni accommodation is usually happy to wait for SF funding to arrive.
