    Hey guys,
I know it's probably too late but I firmed UCL and put my insurance as Edinburgh (I'll be doing medicine) but I am really worried I won't like UCL.

part of the reason I picked ucl is because it is closer to home, and I have a disabled brother who I help look after, but I am starting to think I would prefer edinburgh

In theory, I could miss my ucl offer (A*aa) and still go to edinburgh, but is it possible to actually swap universities?

    Thank you

It is possible to swap if the two universities agree to it.

Up till when is this possible?
because I'm finding it pretty hard to explain to my parents why I want to go there (essentially because it is less expensive/crowded)

swaps get much harder after the end of july i believe, the sooner you sort it the better.

If you're certain, you can try and do it now or you could wait until results day when many people will be getting different results than they expected and universities will be expecting calls about changing places. That would also give you more time to think about it.

You don't officially become a part of that uni until results day (where it's then easy to change) and even after that swaps are supposed to be available until 2 weeks -at least that was the policy in 2014- into your course (where your then obliged to start paying without refunds for the UCL degree)
But it's completely acceptable to call up even now (before results day) to cancel your UCL offer and accept Edinburgh

"UCAS will not be able to change any replies, even ifproviders give permission, after 28 July"

However remember that it requires the agreement of both universities and for them to notify UCAS of their agreement - so give yourself at least a fortnight before then to sort this out.

I'm not sure where you got this impression from but it isn't correct.

It isn't possible to cancel an accepted firm offer without withdrawing from UCAS altogether for this cycle. For anything else an applicant need to seek agreement from all the universities concerned to a change.

Making changes after results day is a terrible idea.

It's possible but comes with a LOT of additional stress and fewer guarantees and much higher risks.

Given that the OP wants to change to Edinburgh (which as a Scottish university has their freshers/welcome week on 10 September) then suggesting waiting until mid August to start sorting this is really bad advice.

I was in the same position as you last year with SOAS and Edinburgh, so a very similar situation.

First I emailed SOAS and Edinburgh telling them I wanted to switch. Then I called UCAS and told them.

You can do it by phone if you want, but I found it easier to just email the 2 unis.

I did this around May. After June/July they don't let you switch, so if you do want to change your firm/insurance I'd strongly suggest doing it now, otherwise you won't be able to.

In the end I withdrew my application on results day and reapplied for 2016 entry, but what I said above still stands!

    Hope this helps!

The TechN1304, essentially the problem is I have not visited Edinburgh in a while (due to personal circumstances was not able to attend the offer holder day) hence I would ideally like to wait until after my exams (27 June is when they finish) to atleast have a good look or think about it.

Essentially, would this be far too late?

P.S. Why did you change to Edinburgh (just being nosey haha)

Ah thank you very much, so 28 July is definitely the last date? x

Yes - but that's the last date for universities to notify UCAS not for you to start contacting universities.

Definitely too late. Someone else in my year wanted to change to Edinburgh and tried doing it at the end of June and was told no. It might be tough, but I'd make the decision now whether or not you want to go to UCL.

Personally, I felt that I would get much more of a 'uni' experience in Edinburgh than London. London is big, and London unis give the impression of everything being scattered around and I wanted an actual community feel which I don't really think is as strong in London.

That and I preferred the course at Edinburgh and the fact that it was much more flexible than SOAS (ironic considering SOAS is supposed to be a specialist uni for Japanese).

Ah you sound exactly like me - worried London is too expensive and loud for me haha (I'm more of a quiet night in gal)
    Good luck at Edinburgh!
