An offensive by the Syrian Democratic Forces has apparently been launched against ISIS in the Manbij area, west of the Euphrates river. A number of villages have been captured.

The SDF is a coalition led by the YPG and including some Arab groups allied to them. Manbij is one of ISIS' strongholds in Aleppo province.

The SDF captured the Tishrin dam in December, allowing them to cross the Euphrates river, but they sat there not doing much for ages. This was apparently due to Turkish concerns about the Kurdish YPG and not wanting them to advance west of the Euphrates.

Despite that, there is now an ongoing offensive backed by US air power. So this is potentially an interesting front to watch.

In my opinion, this war cannot be won without a ground offensive

Agreed. The US have already backed forces in an attempt to topple regimes and it has never worked.

Turkey has to sort itself out economically and politically before it's accepted in the EU.

    Most definitely.

It's likely there'll be some kind of deal between the Turks and the EU, and somehow they'll be accepted in.

And remember, people voting in, you don't have a say in whether they join or not, it's up to those bureaucrats.

Nor do you have any say in the 5 other countries attempting to join. This is a reason why I'm voting out. The EU is not a democracy.
