# the median: n/2 or n+1/2 Watch

1. I am confused on what is the estimated median . Some say the median is n/2 while others say n+1/2. Which one should i use? suppose the cumulative frequency is up till 40, the textbook says that the median value is 20 but why cant it be 20.5?
2. (n+1)/2

Examples:

n is an even number:
1,2,9,20

Median = (4+1)/2 th number = 2.5th number = 5.5

n is an odd number:
1,2,8,9,10

Median = (5+1)/2 th number = 3rd number = 8
