How long does an application and referencing process take?

I'm going to look at a place to rent off an estate agent and they're saying that the application and referencing process could take up to 10 days, but I want to know how quick it can happen.
I think ten days is pretty reasonable. They have to do credit checks and look at your references etc. They cna try and speed it up, but they might rely on the LL to get back to them. I doubt you are important enough to them.
