Hi,
Shame you had a bad store to work in. Nero has been great for me!!

My team is the best, we have such a laugh but yes as other have said it can be very hard work. We do have smaller teams than other competing coffee shops but that is how we can keep our prices down and yet service speed is still good. It just means you need to be organised and fast.

Nero isn't a temporary job because it takes to long to get good enough to serve in the Nero style. For the right people progression can be fast, loads of incentives (Nero really put money into keeping staff happy) and pay is good. The crap someone has written about managers being on 16k is WWWAAAAAYYYY off, I think all but one of my baristas are on at least 16k

If you are looking for an easy job this isn't for you!!! and you probably should be in the hospitality trade full stop. If you are hard working fun loving and get/are a good manager (it is most important to have a good manager) then you might not ever want to leave

And what about the salary of each? All equals?? do you know exactly how much it??

thank you!!!

Your baristas are on 16k!? I'm a shift leader on 30 hours pw and I get about £10,200 a year.

im currently shift leader at Nero, and i don't know what everyone is going on about it being hard, and having to do overtime and not get paid for it, when we close the shop we are normally finished in about 10 minuets and we get paid till 45 minuets till after we shut. all i do is sit there on my phone play games and eating cakes, best job to have for a student.

Eh... I wish N@f4w350m3 words were true since I work there. Let's see:

"Caffe Nero provide 1/2 hour breaks for under 18s every 4 hours and 20 minute breaks every 6 hours for over 18s. These breaks are also provided with free food and drink from the store. I will be shocked If you can tell me any other hospitality establishment that consistently provides this."

False. up to 6h there is no break nor food or drinks at all. for over 6h there's one sandwich and 2 drinks between water and coke.

"According to some you dont get paid for over time at the store closing.. you get 30 whole minutes to close the store!! If you take longer than this its probably because you are incompetent and incapable of decent labour. Seriously, who cant clean a coffee machine, a dishwasher and the floor in half an hour.. especially when there is TWO of you doing it."

False. We don't get paid for overtime. Never. And those 30 whole minutes are absolutely not enough for cleaning a coffee machine, a dishwasher and the floor since you have to add two toilets to be bleached and mopped, muffins to be moved in their box, trash to be removed and all the cups/jugs/equipment to be washed belonging to the last customers. Especially when there is ONLY YOU doing it as the other person is in the office counting the tills and filling the paperworks.

"In regards to progression, store and area managers are constantly on the look out for "rising stars" (this, for all you work shy/lazy people means someone who is great at their job, customer service, cares about the company etc and therefore will become great managers. Not for the people to strive to work at mcdonlads or want a job where you can skive off, not give a damn and go home early.. yeah folks.. you will never get employed) and they will be helped to climb the ladder within the company using appropriate training courses which involve travel, which is also completely paid for, leading to running your own store or area or becoming part of the team at head office, all of which are incredibly highly paid jobs with lots of bonus's."

False again. I became shift leader in basically no time copying the answers from a colleague's book despite those answers were almost all wrong. Payrise? few cents per hour. Incredibly high paid jobs at head office? That at least explains why anyone out of head office, including managers, get between 11k and 14k per year.

"All in all I believe that Nero is a fantastic company to work for and for the unfortunate lot who didnt think so I reckon its because they have no idea what a days work involves, have no people skills and probably dont work at all now. Benefits much?"

I do work there. And I have friends in different nero shops, baristas and managers. Oddly enough, we all share the same opinion. Probably you work for a caffe nero in a parallel universe.

In addition to all of this, I'd like to make you aware of the fact I once fell sick after 1h into a shift, got fever and asked my manager to substitute me for the day. Manager reply was "nobody is available" and made me work for 9h, the entire shift, despite my fever. Even customers were saying "you shouldnt be here, go home". At shop's closing time, I stated I was going home and manager complained about me not doing my part of cleaning. Unbelievable.

Hi there, I would like to ask you something regarding working for CN. Not sure if you still visit this thread but if so I would appreciate if you can get back to me..Thanks!!

Everything you said is false, the first comment was more accurate. All barista's i know are getting from 13k-15k per year. All Store managers are getting from 23k-28k per year.Area managers get over 30k.The least barista's are getting paid to start of is 6.5ph and working minimum 40hrs a week, getting paid every 2 weeks.

Every day staffs get to have 30mins break, as much coffee/tea as you like.. as for lunch break, you are allowed any food (panini/wrap/pasta/salad/soup) and one pastry with 2 bottled drinks (coke/water) per 30mins break. Its hard work and you are on your feet your entire shift, the tasks are never ending as the store is never quiet..the mornings are the busiest, for obvious reasons..and when you work the morning shift..the time goes very fast and you are busy throughout the shift, if you work with a good supportive team then it's great, otherwise..it could be a problem.

They do trainings time to time in their training centre which is always fun. I have just started working for this company, so far i like it.. the team i am working with seem supportive enough, and i have been a quick learner so i think they all appreciate that from me the most, it's been good so far. Ignore the false statements, ignore the negative comments, you won't know till you try it.. also make sure you understand that this is a very physical and hardworking job, it's not for lazy people, everyone has to work hard.
Cheers.

Can anyone tell me what notice I have to give if I'm within my first month?

I work at Caffe Nero, the hours are long and the breaks are minimal. The wage is above minimum wage. Currently at £6.95 for my age group Under 21, minimum wage is £5.30. If you can handle long shifts of up to 12.5hrs with two 20minutes break. Thats the worst it could get if full time. Training is provided very well.. but depends on which store and what the staff/manager there is like. Some are fantastic, some are awful.
