Alpha testing may also be known as the "acceptance testing". Acceptance testing is done using simulated data, which means the data is not user interaction-dependent. (it might be a file with ready commands etc). The beta testing is what brings the actual interaction with user. But acceptance testing just shows that the system works , theoretically, how it should work according to its predefined specification.
So basically, simulated data is a data predefined by the developer (eg. changes in the aerodynamics, if it is a flight simulator), which is executed without user's interaction (so it is not random events - dependent), used to check if the basic aspects of the system (game engine or whatever) work.
