    Genes are usually on one or the other strand, not both I think. DNA is also double stranded. To do any hybridisation experiment using a probe there is a denaturing step that breaks the hydrogen bonds and makes your target site accessible. I think DNA probe and gene probe are used interchangeably and work the same way, although a DNA probe does not necessarily bind to a gene region.
