    This is from June 2011- the answer is D but I don't really understand why
    Could someone explain it please?

    10 This question is about four compounds with molecular formula C4H8O.

    A CH3COCH2CH3

    B CH3CH2CH2CHO

    C CH3CH CHCH2OH

    D CH2 CHOH
    CH2 CH2
    (this doesn't show but all the carbons are joined in a rectangle shape )

    (a) The compounds which react when heated with a mixture of potassium
    dichromate(VI) and sulfuric acid are
    A) compounds A, B and C.
    B) compounds A, B and D.
    C) compounds A, C and D.
    D) compounds B, C and D.

    Compound A is a ketone, butanone, so it cannot be oxidized any further.
    Compound B is an aldehyde, butanal, so can be oxidized to a caboxylic acid, butanoic acid.
    Compound C is a primary alcohol, butan-1-ol, so can be oxidised to an aldehyde under distillation or carboxylic acid under reflux.
    Compound D is cyclobutanol, it is a tertiary alcohol so will be oxidised to a ketone, cyclobutanone
