So did you do Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry ALL to A-Level and have 7A* 2A at GCSE to get a place?

All really fierce competition at both Oxford and Cambridge and they are LIMITED places available.

More mathematical and theory based at Oxbridge?
Why on earth would I do Chemistry? I did the others and took Product Design and Art for fun (and didn't do very well in them). My GCSEs aren't exactly stunning either, but then I don't really see the relevance of a GCSE in German to a degree in compsci and I'd be willing to argue with anyone who thinks it does!

There's quite a lot of theory, yes, there isn't any `learn how to make websites using frontpage/dreamweaver' crap as it's fairly assumed any monkey who can get into cam can work out how to do that if they need to. There is a lot of theory of more practical things though, such as OS, digi electronics, hardware design, VLSI, Verilog HDL but the emphasis is always on the theory behind them rather than the current main program that is used etc. It's not just semantics, types, lambda calc, combinators, number and set theory etc!
